I have one year left before I get my bachelors in criminal justice and am seriously considering a career in the border patrol.... is anyone here a border patrol officer and can tell me how things have worked out for them?

I have been with the Border Patrol for the last 19 years. Its been great and I have no complaints.

Alot depends on what station you get sent to initially, some of the stations in Texas are in border towns that are small, remote, and are not much different from the town on the other side of the line.

Right now they are still beefing up Tucson (Arizona) Sector so there would be a good chance of being assigned here. The politicians want to increase the size of the Patrol by another 6000 agents by the end of fiscal year 08 (next October), I do not see how that will happen due to the logistics of getting that many new agents hired and trained.

Let me know what questions you have and I will be happy to try to answer them for you.

Points made by Pinzauger and Pevrs114 all vaild.  I did nearly six years as a Border Patrol Agent before going to another Federal LE agency.  I left the USBP on good terms and never forgot where I came from.

It also worked out OK for some who stayed with the Patrol. One of my Academy classmates is now Chief of the Border Patrol pulling down in excess of $150,000/year and could walk away tomorrow with a pension of in the neighborhood of $105,000/year.

Excellent site run by an old BP buddy who was a Marine before he was a Border Patrol Agent, FWIW.  If you've more specific questions, I'll try to answer them.

considering joining as soon as I get my bachelor's at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009. It's looking to be rather promising but am also considering Texas Game Warden. Says I can actually carry my own personal weapon as long as it is approved by the Chief Agent. that's cool.
