Hey folks, a fellow officer needs some help/advice and I'm reaching out to ARF.com community   I'm a Detective in a south metro Atlanta city.  Over the last 5 years my city has really grown.  As population goes up, so does crime.  We are getting nailed with armed roberies.  Theres about 1 out 10 arrest rate.  In most cases some perp comes in wearing a ballcap and sunglasses gets the cash and is gone.  I'm doing all the basics (secure the area, process the scene, interview the victim and witnesses, canvas area, pull video / sketch artist and get the picture to all agencys in area).  I'm still coming up blank.  I'd really like to hear from some other Detectives with robbery experience and see how you work these. Thanks for any help.

Im not a detective, but my pops is...
You might try setting up a map that shows the areas hit. If there's been a bunch of places hit in a particular area, then you may be able to figure where the subject is from and/or where he/she/they may hit next. Also pin point the type of places hit and their locations (ie near the freeway/highway, secluded, or near area they can blend and hide in like Wal-Mart).

Also consider the race of the owners/workers of the places being hit. If GA is anything like TX then it could be racial based. We had a bad outbreak of anti-arabian for awhile where I live.

Basicly profile the nature of the incidents in general...

But like I said, Im not detective... Just an EMT/FF who watched too much CSI, Criminal Minds, and NCIS...lol Best of luck to you and your investigations, stay safe out there!

Can the Sheriff asssist, I mean they probably have more manpower and resources to throw at it. I assume he is dealing with a small dept.

Not a detective.  6 years patrol with Macon (2 years on night time bicycle patrol).  Over 4 years now with Mercer University PD.

Are these taking place in a general area?  Fairly close time frame (give or take a few hours), daytime, evenings, graveyard?  If these are happening in a one square mile area or less, probably lives in the vicinity.

Any businesses, schools, banks, hospitals, etc, etc with video surveillance pointed toward the general vicinity of the crime area?  Even a block away, if the perp was on foot, he might of crossed the field of view of the camera (long shot  I know).

Do you have any CIs in the general area?  I had a few CIs when I worked for Macon that gave me good tips on burglaries and entering autos.

Any credit/debit cards taken?  If so, have they been used?  Lots of businesses of video surveillance so you can get lucky here.  Used this to close out a burglary on campus last year.  Actually, the perp pawned some DVDs at a video store.  Got his picture and signature on receipts.

Get some informants.  They'll point you in the right direction.

Talk to your dope guys if you've never run with informants.  They can help you out with them....or give you tips on how to get them.

You probably are having commuter robberies.  Take a look at access/egress routes to all your locations and see if any of them have routes in common. That may point to some of your suspects.

Make your sketch available to everyone (via department website, at least) and suggest all merchants print and post it on their front door. Some believe that bad guys will not rob a store where they think they will be excpected and easily recognized. For that matter, some think bad guys don't give a shit about what they do.

my 2 cents.

Nothing like money to motivate a snitch. TV spots with rewards offerred for tips on robbery suspects.

A good crime mapping program to predict future crimes for OT details.\

Best still photos or video should go to gang units and SRO's who are most likely to recognize a younger suspect.

Stakeout teams in likely targets.  The story goes something like this:

Guy holds up local Stop 'N Rob.  Stakeout team comes out of back, say: Police, freeze!, but he draws down on them and is shot.

Preliminary hearing to determine probable casue. The State puts on a prima facia case. Defendant is present, but heavily bandaged. Then the defendant insists on testifying.

Goes like this:

Defendant: What the officer says is basically true.  I walked in, said "give me the money" and was waiting for my money.  Then I hear someone behind me say "Adios, mother f'ker and I got shot".
