Poll Coming! I cuff with my strong hand (right) and cuff their right hand (usually also their strong) first. |
|
If they are compliant, I hold the cuffs in my right (strong) hand, and have them hold their hands behind their back, palms out. I cuff their left hand first, mainly b/c that's the quickest and easiest way to get the hook on them for me. I finish up and double lock. If they're not compliant, it's usually plant them face down and hook asshole to elbow... whatever it takes to get them hooked. |
That's a little rough. Don't you whisper in her ear first? ![]() Usually right hand (my educated hand) to right hand first and then the left hand. Non compliant. Polyester pile and once in control the cuffs magically appear on wrists. Learned a valuable lesson. Getting a cuff on some one who is not controlled can get you smacked with the cuff flopping around on guys arm. Kinda hurts. Always seems to leave visible injury on you or partner. |
|
If they aren't compliant, there is usually more of us then them so whatever way works. If they are compliant, I cuff using my strong hand (right) to their left first, switch hands on the cuffs and cuff their right. That way I maintain control of the cuffs and their arm(s). |
|
I use my right hand since my cuff case (Bianchi Open Top Cuff case) is on the right side of my belt, behind my key loop (I'm corrections) and I keep my left hand (strong hand) up front while keeping the inmate in check while I stand at a 45 degree angle with my left leg forward on the inside of the inmate's right leg, so if he decides to "buck", I reach with my strong hand (left) around his neck and put the inmate down on the ground using my body weight on him. Haven't done it yet, but I guarantee you, I'm ready for it. |

I'm in a tac unit so I always have a partner on hand. We have a sign that that we use when we decide to put the hooks on someone. We are both always there when they go on. (We are both 6'04, 230-250lbs). Anyway, when it's decided, we both walk up to the subject in a nonaggressive manner and place our hands on him together before the pouch comes unsnapped. Too many times we are off to the races as soon as the cuffee hears the snap or velcro of the cuff case. Once hands are on him, cuff with the right hand, and always knuckle to knuckle. Be safe and tactical. Always have a plan in mind. |
big +1..unless you are applying a carotid choke hold.. |
Pfft, whatever gets the horse in the barn works. |
BULL. Have you ever had something go wrong using that technique and had to explain it to a grand jury? NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER state or write down in a report "I put my arm around his neck" and took him to the ground. PERIOD. |
|
While my agency has a VERY specific procedure for cuffing, of course it goes right out the window in a struggle. The one good thing I have heard from locals as well as state about all of my agency's law enforcement training is the way we teach cuffing is very good. |
Guess you never heard of the LVNR either ![]() Something wrong is not the officer, but the suspect manipulating the position. |
Why not, it;s gonna be on the video. I don't allow the suits in the chairs cancel my right to life. |
