| I am scheduled to take the Houston Civil Service Exam on August 24th. I was wondering how the test is scored and if there is anything I should study before taking it? Any of you guys work for HPD? How do you like it? Also I am a USMC Reservist so I am told that will add some points to my exam....anyone know how that works? |

I just finished taking three different civil service exams. Basic math, reading comprehension and one was part personality test. Two of the tests has a study guide between 12 and 15 pages, you had 25 minutes to memorize. The hardest part was memorizing the wanted persons section. Remembering height, weight, crimes, names, aliases, etc. |
| you can buy police enterance exam study guides at book stores like Barnes & Noble. They are kinda cheesy but give you a good understanding of what the format of the test will be like. I used one and think it helped. I would especially recommend one if you have been out of school for a while. |

I took HPD's civil service exam may 17 and it was a total joke. It basically consists of about 30 multiple choice questions that are simple reading comprehension. The other guys are correct in saying that you should extensively prepare for other civil service exams like the ones in New York but this test was one of the easiest and most basic tests that i have ever taken. Be warned though that they are interviewind a LOT of candidates and the process will take a minimum of 6 months. I applied in may as an out of town candidate and did the first interview on the spot back at the station (they drive you in a van from GRB to HPD). The told me when i was done with the first interview that they were still interviewing the march and april candidates and that it wouldnt be untill at least sept. or oct. untill they call me in for the second interview. Dont worry about the civil service exam, in fact if you post on here regularly (implying that you know how to read) dont even bother preparing for it. |
