Guys I'm going to my first SWAT class next week. I was real excited until I found out there was a 1 mile run with a gas mask on. WTF.   How common is this. |

Pretty common. Expect long, hard, physical days that extend into tne night (especially if you will being doing green ops). Physical exertion and sleep deprivation combined with the mental work to resolve the scenerios will come as close as you can in training to a real world effort required to be a SWAT team member. If you are not in shape, you might consider waiting until you are. I can't tell you how many prospects I have seen show up physically unprepared, they do not make the first day. If you are in shape, don't sweat it. Things like the gas mask run will be a PITA, but no sweaty-da. You wil do fine. |

Sounds pretty normal. We were made to play 5 on 5 full court basketball to 10. Took 1 hour just to get to 5 to 3. Needless to say we didn't make it to 10. hikes Just part of the game. Have fun. |
| Have fun with the gas. When I went to basic SWAT they gassed us twice. The first time was like you said, no biggie, got gassed plently in the Marines. The second time was at the range. Little gas house, went in with mask on and removed mask while in the gas room. After 2 or 3 minutes (seemed like 20 to me) we exited the gas house and ran down to the range and fired a short pistol / subgun course. Very cool block of instruction. |
