Hello . The purpose of this thread is to discuss K-9 units on the force . Our local PD has requested funds from the City Council to purchase a K-9 unit . The last K-9 unit our town had generated zero arrests . What I am looking for is examples where a K-9 unit is beneficial to my community . I am also looking for any negatives to having a K-9 unit here again . Please keep in mind I intend to present any quotable statistics to our City Council to help them determine which course of action they will take . For what it matters , my personal belief in the matter follows . I believe the money spent on a K-9 unit would be better spent getting the local officers more involved in the children of the community lives. We have a great town to raise kids in until they get to the teen years , and than trouble starts as Kodiak can be a very boring place after you have lived here a long time .I feel if they have the money to train a K-9 and re certify a officer for a K-9 unit they should just add another officer to the local PD instead . I also believe that the department should concentrate more on human intel by doing more activities that get them out of the cars and into the community at large . So any info you can provide one way or the other would be appreciated . Thank you . |

Sounds like you are trying to address 2 different issues. What is the biggest reason your PD wants a K9 unit? Tracking, drug detection? A K9 unit could be a great community relations resource. Kids love animals.. Our dog master has "hockey cards" with a pic of his dog and a short bio on the back that he gives out to children at the local schools, etc. |
