Chicago police officers may lose their discretion on how to handle a traffic stop if local elected officials adopt a proposed ordinance that would dictate their behavior. And if they don't follow the ordinance, they could be subject to a minimum $100 fine as well as possible discipline from the department.

City officials are considering the ordinance following the July 13th traffic stop of a state senator who claimed he was racially profiled by a Chicago police officer.

Proponents say the "code of conduct" is designed to protect motorists as well as help police by requiring motorists to stay in their vehicles during stops. The ordinance would require officers to "approach the motorist in a cautious, safety-minded manner" and "politely inform the driver of the reason and purpose of the traffic stop," addressing the driver by name and "appropriate title" (Mr., Ms.) after examining the driver's license.

In turn, motorists are required to pull over immediately, provide proper identification, keep hands visible and stay in their cars.

Violators, including police officers, would be subject to a $100 minimum fine.

A spokesman for police administration told The Chicago Tribune, that the department "welcomes any conversations in our efforts to augment public education about how to conduct yourself during a traffic stop. We are open to looking at any way we can augment current efforts to train officers on how to conduct traffic stops professionally."

I used to work for CPD and it is an ate-the-fuck-up dept.

I arrested an alderman for DUI, U.P.C.S., U.P.C., U.P.D.P. and U.U.W. - For you non-illinoisans thats Drivin' Doped Up, Unlawful Possesion Controlled Substance (Coke), Unlawful Poss. Cannabis (weed), Unlawful Poss Drug Para (Pipe) and Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Taurus 9mm in the center console).

First he claimed the DUI was due to the cold medication he'd taken...not the coke in his blood sample.

Second, he claimed that I planted the 1 oz of powdered coke we found stuffed in his shorts at the jail, the baggie of weed I observed in plain view that he'd tried to hide by jamming bewteen the seat and the center console...not to mention the clouds of MJ smoke rolling out of the car AND that I also planted the three MJ pipes later discovered in the center console, along with rolling papers et al.

Lastly, I somehow also managed to plant the full size Taurus 9mm that was found in his console during the vehicle search...the one with the serial number ground off.

So, needless to say, I got sued.

I fuckin hate Shitcago.

I'm surprised he didn't try equating his "conservator of the peace" status as an elected official to peace officer for the CCW...
