Hey all... I have been interested in Law Enforcement for some time, but currently I have a lifestyle that demands I keep my present job.  Do any of you have experience with part-time LEO positions?  I would think that perhaps many officers would like some weekends off, creating an opportunity for part-time weekend help.  Obviously I'm going to discuss this with the locals, but I wanted some other opinions, and you all came to mind.  Thanks very much......

Could always become a reserve officer. Some citys have better programes than others...... Youll either get paid and have to buy your own equipment or volunteer and have your equipment paid for.

In my experience, the part time LEO positions in my area have been guys fresh out of the basic school waiting to be hired by an agency full time, or guys that have retired from LEO work and want to keep their certification and hand in LE on a part time basis. No reserve positions here, so can't comment on that.

I remember when I was up in school 9(upstate NY) I was talking with one of the local cops, and he told me he was a part-timer.  He had previously worked for the county sheriff's office, but left there and ended up getting a part time job at a local, small department.  I believe the department was able to save things like paying benefits and giving vacation time by having part time guys supplementing the full time guys.

I started out a a Reserve.  They didn't pay bennies so they paid us a little more than the full timers.  We had to buy our own duty gear, weapons, vests.  The full timers didn't mind, they used the hell outta us.   I worked all day and spent 8 hours at night.  Finally ended up going full time after one year.

I started as a Reserve, received my APOST certification and worked part-time for 10 years. Usually 32 to 40 hours a week. I made three times what local full time LEO's did at my civie job. Most part-time positions were filled by guys working full time for another agency.

I worked as a JAFR for over a year before I went full time sworn.

Thanks for the info... This is good food for thought.

ETA - Sounds like a Reserve officer is more what I had in mind.  I'll try to talk with the locals and see what they think.  Thanks again....
