| How many departments issue a standard weapon, but allow their officers to carry something else that they purchase? We issue the Glock 22, and 23, but some want to purchase their own Model 21's. I need some numbers and any facts that anyone can offer that I may not have thought of. We used to have this policy under another Chief, but this one did away with it. We'd like to try and get it reinstated. Thanks in advance. |
| Many of the larger federal agencies, such as FBI and the DEA, have such a policy. They list all of the models agents are allowed to buy and carry. Once an agent has a personal weapon approved for carry, it becomes like a government weapon. It must be inspected before being used and once approved, it is only worked on by the agency armorer. It must be qualified with just as a government owned weapon, and its loss must be reported just like a government owned weapon. |

My Dept. issues Beretta 92's if you insist on a Dept issue. Policy says we're allowed to purchase and carry any "quality and Instructor-approved" weapon from 9mm up to .45, no Magnums and no SA-Only. Same policy for back-ups/off-duty except .380 is included. We've only issued 2 Berettas out of 16 or 17 Officers. One still carries a S&W 66, most of the others are various Glocks and most of those are .40's. There's one guy carrying a .40 Sigma (which, strangely enough, functions flawlessly), one carrying a Beretta .40 Cougar and a few still carrying Glock 9mm's. On a side note, the Chief likes 1911's and is considering modifying Dept policy to include SA-only semis. I hope he does. Much as I love my G23, I'd much rather be carrying a 1911! Bub |
Same for us, if the weapon is 40 S&W or .223 the Dept. furnishes the ammo. Any other caliber the Officer has to purchase acceptable ammo (approval by Armorer and Sheriff). |
Whats up Hobbs. I just wish Phoenix would allow to carry something other than Glocks. I can't even carry one of my SIGs or Kimbers off duty. Only a department approved Glock. Our "Rifles" are post-ban Colt HBARs. Don't even get me started on their firearms policies........ |

Our old Chief limited us to 9mm but you could carry Ruger (issued), Beretta Sig or S&W. The new Chief expanded it to just about any gun Brand and caliber for field duty (9mm, .40 and .45). He even add H&K and Glocks. I quickly went out and bought a Sig 220 (.45). He |

Shit. I hate these posts. Someone some where wants to limit our options. Contact the FBI for research and NTOA (good org) for stats and info. We allow any quality backup, and issue G22 or G23. Carry 3 handguns as far as the admin goes. I can't complain about the upper brasses opinions or attitude. Art in KY |
Come to our unit, at least we have nice ARs. |

Reserve Deputies here all must carry their own weapon as the department doesn't purchase much for us. Deputies can carry almost whatever they want. I think they are on the same guidelines the reserves are and there aren't very many rules. Most carry 1911s or Glocks though. There are a few that carry something else, that's more common in the reserves though. City PD all have to carry the Beretta 96FS issued by the department. I think I'll be sticking with County when I go full time. |
Come to our unit, at least we have nice ARs. ![]() I told my wife about what you said about Titty bars and beer and she said no....... I'll keep working on her though |

Harris County Sheriff's Department (Houston, Tx) which I retired from has a list of approved weapons handgun, shotgun and rifles which the Deputy may purchase and carry. In my 27 years I carried Colt Commander, S&W 66, S&W 686, S&W 57, S&W 4506, S&W 4006, S&W 469 and S&W 627. Each Deputy must qualify with each weapon he or she wants to carry on duty or off duty. We could only carry hollowpoint ammo, ball ammo was not allowed. Bluedevil

Boy, oh boy, another topic near and dear to my heart. Our agency issues handguns. We are allowed to carry a personally owned backup gun as long as we qualify with it annually and have it checked over and documented. The personally owned weapon argument has been one I've been pumping since before I became a firearms instructor. We have over 100 sworn officers. One handgun is not best for 100+ people. In today's day and age, money is a big issue with every agency. Make a list of approved weapons, set some requirements for their usage, and issue the other weapon to the folks who don't want anything else. Talk about saving some money. If I hear the argument that 'well, we're looking into it, the corporation counsel is leery of it' one more time, I'll be fishing somewhere for a couple of weeks, because that is just BS. That's because corp counsel is an idiot that has never been a cop. So, I can carry a personally owned backup gun (by P&P) but not a duty weapon that I own. Now, we've argued the same point for rifles...but man, people are stupid. VJ |

When I started, I carried my personal S&W Model 64 with issued ammo. Then we went to the Sig P226 9mm's. I carried one of those for about 16 years. Other officers carried their personally owned Glock 17's. Next we were issued Glock 19's for a short time. Some still carried their Glock 17's. Now we're issued the Glock 22. All full time officers carry the Glock 22's. Part time and reserve officers carry issued or approved 9mm's. One guy carries a S&W .45cal. (chief's buddy). For back-up and off duty we can carry the Glock 22 or a firearm from an approved list. We all use issued ammo, 40cal or 9mm. Colt_SBR |
but allow officers to buy & carry any .40 off the "approved" list.
