I was kind of a wild kid.  I did a lot of 'recreational substances' when I was in high school, though I was never caught with any, arrested, charged, or anything.  The last time I did anything like that was fifteen years ago.

I was completely honest on my employment questionnaire, and they asked me some questions about it today at my oral interview.  I emphasized that I hadn't done anything like that since 1988, and had had no side effects/flashbacks/whatever.

Does this matter, do you think?  Or is it so long ago that I'll be ok?

I would think as long as you were honest with them you will be alright.  After all, 15 years ago is a long time.

I'm a background investigator for my dept.  I can tell you this, lying is an auto knock out.

Keep it honest, it is your best chance.

Good luck!!!

I don't mean to put you in a situation open for any kind of embarassment (this was the past after all)

but it really depends on the drug.  Here, the state patrol wont hire you if you've ever tried cocaine, or smoked weed more than 15 times.

Just be honest through your entire testing process and I suspect you'll come out just fine... 15 years is a long time to wise up.

Good luck

I was asked by the oral board "Have you ever used, or been under the influence of any illegal drugs"?

I responded "That is two seperate questions... May I answer them respectively?"

Puzzled look "go ahead"

"I have never used illegal drugs. The closest I've come was in college, where I was at several parties where marijuana cigarettes were passed. When offered, I simply passed them along, and never actively inhaled from them.

Looking back, I realize that, being in a room full of people smoking marijuana, I was probably subject to the phenomenon called a "contact high". So I have been under the influence of marijuana, but no, I never actively participated in the act of smoking it."

The Board complimented me on my answer, and I place 6/24 on the list.

Be honest. Hell, that interview was the year I graduated! ('89)

I am our Dept. recruiter and I am an interviewer on the oral boards.
What we look for is if they have used drugs since they were an adult.  It has to do with their decision making.  If they are 23 y.o and they used drugs 2 years prior in college, we won't take 'em.
If they are 30 yo and they haven't used drugs since they were a 20 yo in college, and there was very few instances of use, the use is generally overlooked.  However....
ANY LSD, or PCP use, regardless of how long ago, will automatically disqualify them.
We had a candidate admit to the oral board about a year prior, that he had not only used injectable steroids, but he also smuggled them across the Mexico border and sold them to his college buddies on the football team.
Needless to say he didn't get hired and the board laughed their ass off when they realized that he did this while he was in the academy!
Ya' gotta wonder sometimes.
Good luck QS!

Hallucinogens are an automatic knock out in most cases.  The rational behind that is the uncontrollable and foreseeable flashback issues.  LSD, Mushrooms and PCP are no no's.  Other than that, like stated above, for the most part you will be ok if you just experimented as a teenager with minor CDS.  Decision making and maturity is the key.

Good Luck!

Just another example of why kids SHOULDN'T be trying this sort of thing out. It can come back to haunt them when theres a job they REALLY want years down the road.

I know that my department would give you a chance, taking into consideration the amount of time that has passed and your age when you did it.
There are others that won't.  You will need to shop around until you find one that will.
