| I live in Fort Worth, TX, but am looking to relocate, and Denver seems ideal at a glance. I am not and have not been a LEO, but that is what I really want to do, so if anyone can offer up some adviceon the Dept. or the city, please do. |

A year ago, every dept in the area was hiring. Some even offering sign on bonuses. Not sure if they are still hurting for help. | Denver is my least favorite of Colorado cities. AZ-K9 is correct (see, its so bad that even people from AZ comment about it [:D]. I have also decided on a LEO career and after looking around Colorado for about 3 months I can tell you that it is difficult to get in on any of the larger city or county law enforcement agencies here due to hiring freezes, etc. Another thing to consider is that Denver banned the posession of "assault weapons" and has challenged the new state law that prohibits cities, etc. from doing so. If you are interested in Colorado and want to be in a populated area that is somewhat gun - friendly, look at Colorado Springs, or the towns north of Denver up to Ft. Collins. Bottom line is that there are much better places than Denver IMHO. Hope this helps. |

One dilemma that I currently have to a large no. of Police Depts is the current college requirements. I am in the process of correcting that at the local community college, but I have only just begun taking classes. Sounds like Denver might not be so "ideal" with a closer look, sounds like its back to the drawing board on locations, that said, any suggestions in light of my current "collegiately challenged" status?? |
| Well, I don't know how it is in other states, but in a lot of the small towns here it is much easier to get on a police force. Some even pay for POST certification, but you may be better off taking the semester long POST certification class on your own if you go this route since you would be an "outsider". The thing is that they don't pay nearly as well as some of the metro PDs (around $22,000). A lot of people who don't have the required college go this route so that they can get experience and later transfer to another PD in an area they want to live in. Personally I would go to college first if possible. It seems to make the process easier and if you ever decided to quit the PD you would have something to fall back on. Good luck. |
