I got in on the Barrett group buy deal and plan on carrying it in the trunk, when I get a case for it. Anyone else carry something similar? Never know whats going to go down.

Ummm, WHY???

That's gonna be an expensive rifle rusting out in a humid trunk!

No one in my area carries one.

1. No city would authorize it.
2. No chief would approve carrying it
3. No certified training or qualification
  course for it.
4. Big liability.
5. Too big to carry
6. How would you secure it in the car, other
than locking it in the trunk. (locking
shotgun and rifle racks are made for cars,
i've never seen one for a .50 cal.)
7. Look out if the bad guys ever got hold of it.
  (another liablity issue)

I have to ask.....What situations would YOU use it for?

Errr. hardened target elimination? "Local marine goes nuts with [insert favorite semi-hardened vehicle here]."

There are LEO training courses on 50's.

Racks can be made to fit. No humidty here in AZ to worry about. Now, about convincing the chief, that one might take some work.

What part of AZ are you in?

Damnit, I just realized this isn't GD so my comment was pretty far off. [brick]

Anyway, since this is going in a squad car's trunk, does it fit?

Also, if you are allowed to use it, will you be keeping it in your car or be removing it every day(it could become tiring moving around a +/- 35 lbs rifle)?

What do you plan on using it for; sticking the bbl into a room and cranking off a round thereby saving your department valuable flashbangs?

...of course it would be pretty cool to see.[:)]

**edited to fix the +/-

Way, way way south and western part.

Oh, and to add to the short list of potential uses: Lets not forget about the almost weekly incursions of the Mexican military across the border here. It's not too distant a thought to have some squads invovled with dope smuggling. Several have been caught escorting truckloads of dope into the U.S.

Are there that many Marines going nuts with tanks in your area?

How come we haven't heard it on the news?

I think a tank would probably be resistant to a .50 cal round unless you have some of those depleted uranium AP rounds (I think those are restricted to military ONLY, not even LEO can get those.)

I don't think I'd engage the Mexican Military anywhere near the border. They will probably have you outgunned. Your Chief may have some trouble with starting war with Mexico by firing on their military troops.

My suggestion would be to leave that particular weapon at home and play with it on your days off.

and just who is going to qualify you with that weapon? Hell, they won't even let us carry .44 magnums anymore. (it used to be status quo with OHP, but who would want to?)

Our SOG actually has a couple .50s in our arsenal for the snipers.  I don't think we have deployed them yet.  We train with them regularly.  Our plan is to use them for disabling vehicles.  A shot in an engine block does wonders!

We have practiced on running vehicles from towers, etc.  We also have a rather expensive larou (sp?) for shooting at longer distances.

We save our .308s for any real anti-personnel duties.

We have considering getting one or two of these for limited tactical applications, but the cost and training time versus actual need has ruled it out, for now.

I really don't see much need for one of these as a patrol weapon, but if YOU think you need it AND can justify it to your brass, go for it.

If I wanted to carry a .50 BMG rifle on Patrol on a routine basis, I would probably get sent to the Department shrink.

Hey Maricopa County Sheriff has an armored personell carrier with an M2HB mounted on top why shouldnt you have a .50 to kill babies with too?

kay9, In case you're interested, the January 2003 issue of Law Enforcement Technology discussed the uses for a .50 caliber rifle.  They said agencies should consider the .50 if any of the following coniditions exist:
1.  There is an airport within an hour's drive.
2.  Any body of water larger than 1km square in the usual response area.
3.  The urban agancy has any buildings or built up areas taller than 3 to 4 stories.
4.  The rural agency has open fields greater than 1 km square.
5.  The agency patrols in marine, desert, or arctic conditions.

We have everything but the desert but I don't think we could ever get anything like that approved.  Good luck if you decide to pursue it and can get it done.  Like everything else we carry, I hope you never really need it.

I forgot to add that the same magazine article also tested several different .50 caliber sniper rifles.  If you are interested in a copy of the articles and can't find the magazine, let me know and I will make a copy and mail it to you.

Come on now, local marine goes nuts with armored vehicle or armed mexican military incursuion. Is that the justification your using?

It's a good justification, the Mexican Military part NEway. They cross the border on a regular basis, sometimes there lost, sometimes there helping people cross illegaly into the U.S., sometimes they are smuggling drugs, or running interfeance for drug smugglers. They've been know to shoot up  marked Border Patrol vehicals on more than one occassion.
