At our dep't, you call one of the sector houses or the Chief's office and they schedule you for a ride-along. On the appointed time and date, you show up and go for a ride with the officer(s). If you're a friend of an officer, the officer can also schedule it. We usually tell our ride-alongs to get out with us on runs, car stops, etc. but not to get between us and whoever we are dealing with for their own safety. |
| I guess living in a small town with a small department (4 full time, 1 part time) it's a little different. If I want I just walk up and say can I ride for a while, and the other night I was talking to the officer on duty and he got dispatched to a call and just said "If your not doing anything, get in and go with me". |
