All - I am looking for an inexpensive way to obtain a IIIA vest and would really like something to which I can add level III or IV plates.  I rarely need one but the possibility exists that I will need one in the future and would like to have one that I can throw on under my EMS clothes.  Our last shooting was 2008.

I know that vests technically expire, but I have it on good authority that expired vests still work fine (this comes from a cartridge engineer who tried out his rounds on old vests).  So, what're your thoughts on supplying EMTs with old vests?

This will be out of my pocket.

Let me know your thoughts.

shellback banshee soft plate backers. They popup in EE, roughly $150/set.

Mostly in the milspec section, but sometimes in the chest rig/holster section.

Around here I see the medics showing up in vests on nearly all suicide and shooting calls.  Is it anything your department would provide if you do research for them?  I don't think everyone of them has one, I think they stay on the trucks and they use them as needed.

Our department got a grant and we purchased 5 sets of body armor and helmets.  I was not a recipient of one of them as I am a reserve TEMS member. I will purchase my own.

I do not have a EE listing. I was in the same spot a while back. Shoot me a IM. I have a TAG Spartan with Interceptor panels. It would fit and work fine. Not tier one but will work.

Spartan I or II? If it's a II What size? I've been looking for a match to my coyote one.

One of our members came through with a decent vest.  It'll do for now.  I need to save some money for a plate carrier and plates, but at least now my next suicidal subject is less likely to get me, too.  Feel free to PM me if you have more info or something I may need.  Thanks for all your replies and support.  It was a crappy feeling to be in a shooting with no protection.

It is a Spartan I that I got because I was in the same boat as OP. I want a II in Coyote as well because side plates and cummerbund is nice to have. I trust used IOTV inserts with a SAPI or Level IV plate.

Late to the party, but have you looked at/considered something like the US Palm Defender? It's pretty much vitals-only coverage so doesn't meet NIJ requirements for true body armor ... but it DOES cover the vitals. And Patriot Plates can be ordered to beef it up.
