snafu from hell. I'm at the station and had no desire to go eat lunch, so my boss goes alone in the brush truck, tells me that if we get anything big, he'll meet me there.  30 minutes into him being gone, we get punched out for an home explosion and structure fire. Well fuck.

(our dept only has one staffed station, and we only have funding for 2 man crews, volunteer back up)

He beats me there, 2 other engine companies are inbound, but several minutes out, so I stop at the plug, he pulls the 5 inch and I lay in. One of our guys was already on scene, so he starts to hook everything up while I get packed up. A bystander asks me about 4 times if I wanted him to pull my line for me. I tell him, nicely, 'no thanks man, I got it'. Reasoning being that I didn't want him to fuck it up. After the fourth time, when I'm just about to pull it myself, I see his IAFF shirt. Yep, Captain at the biggest FD in the state.

That was a tad embarassing.

Now, What I gather from this is first you stopped to get plugged and some guy pulls out his 5" and you lay into it. Then there was another guy on the scene to hook everything up while you get packed? After that some random guy offers to pull your line while your getting packed up? Mind if I ask what line of work your in??? J/k LOL
I have made the mistake of "blowing off" (<=see what I did there? Lol)  a superior when caught up in the middle of some hectic stuff. Pretty awkward and embarrassing. I"m sure he understood.

The guys that helped me get the engine ready were guys on my dept, both senior officers, the guy I told "do not touch the hose please, kthxbai" was a company officer with neighboring FD.

Sorry, sleep dep is a bitch.

I would think a random unidentified stranger pulling on your hose would be a bigger liability than having him help. You did good. Now had he had his white hat and bunker gear on then maybe it would be an understandable embarrassment.

Ok, that actually made me laugh.

I don't understand all the fire lingo, other than our guys sound like a bunch of tools on the radio. They are, however a step above the Highway Departments radio etiquette.

I've stopped at our neighbor's house when the local FD has come there for a call to offer assistance. Even with my FD jacket and ball cap at first all they see is some dude who's not them.

Dont sweat it.

I wouldn't sweat it, when adrenaline is pumping, alot of shit goes out the window... The few times I have stopped to render assistance for leos I saw either fighting or alone in an open stretch of road.. I always identified myself while approaching, those guys could have said  "hey i'm a FF... you need help?"
