| If you had to do it over again would you have made your career in law enforcement? |

Yep. ........ Even with all the negatives and downsides, I love my job. If I can get up in the morning/night to go to work and not dread I think I'm doing better than most. I've had all kinds of jobs. All were OK (except one); I had a job that was arguably more prestigious, but I literally hated every single day there. I made the change to LE. It was a good choice for me. I'd do it again, no doubt. That said, it's a job and I could do something else without hating life. |

I actually just posed this same question to a coworker. I get completely frustrated at work. I work long hours. I see the worst that society has to offer. I hate it.
The flip side of that coin...Could I work Mon thru Fri, 9-5, behind a desk, doing the same menial task, day-in, day-out, for another 30 years? No thanks. I'll take uncertainty, heroism, hatred, thanks, thanklessness, working when others are off, days off while everyone else works, a decent wage, benefits, and a decent pension (in 10 years). That said...maybe firefighter :-) Everyone likes when they show up. |

Despite all the frustration at times when I look at the whole journey I have to say yes. Done and seen shit most folks will never see, plus I get to fight, drive fast and they buy my work clothes for me.
As of Dec 1st I have 12 months left to get my pension. I'll be 44 years old bringing in around $3k a month doing nothing. I'm young enough to keep working at something in the private sector dealing with the skill sets I got in LE. Has been a good run |

Shitty thing is that because I'm in a low cost area I can't do the Cali or NY retirement and move to some place cheap. |

A pension is not meant to sustain you in the same manner of living you had while working. if someone expects to maintain their working-years lifestyle, they need to keep working. There are always exceptions for those who did well on investments or whatever. I expect to drastically downsize my expenses once I retire. |

If you have been paying attention to, for example, what WI did a while back you will see that a LOT of people are pretty upset over paying out pensions that are mathematically unsustainable without driving taxes through the roof. It won't be long before a lot of public pensions are going to seriously change. Incidentally while a 3K pension means slim pickings in NY or LA, it means a damned good living in a lot of other places. I have a shipmate that is planning on moving from the Boston area to East Podunk, WV when he retires in a couple of years. |

Shit I'll be a young man still so I'm gonna keep working the gun shop but go full time and keep building My Company up. Big help is the sammich maker is 13 years younger than me and kicking ass in the Mary Kay world. Edit; while you are there buy something

Best thing I ever did was listen to my civil service family members and get into the 457 heavily as soon as possible. That, plus my other investments and staying single with no kids made retiring very easy. |

What would be interesting here is the range of pay in the Law Enforcement line of work.
I might post another poll because I seem th think that the pay range is VERY wide, likely between 20K and 100K+ yearly, depending on any number of things, mostly area. While ol' Barney down in Mayberry may be on the lower end of things, a cop in, say LA or NYC would make several times what Andy makes. I think I'llmake another poll. |

Camden PD is hiring if you don't mind working in Mogadishu. My agency starts around 35K. My base as a having been a sgt for 11 years is 53K but we have unlimited OT so I make a lot more. |
