Was told today Dept policy is no open carry while off duty. You must be concealed with a weapon that you have qualified with. I have never heard of a Dept doing this. Is this a common practice?

It's not that unusual.  Most places I'm familiar with say it must either be concealed, or carried openly with your badge also visible.  I'm not sure why anyone would want to advertise like that anyway.

Concealed only here of course.

If I'm going to carry under my creds, policy is to conceal and to carry a qualled on weapon.

We were only allowed to carry the two weapons we qualled with.

We just had either our duty weapon or our BUG.

Pretty standard. For my agency, carry in plainclothes means concealed unless on an active crime scene or in an office.

Exactly......My Department is small enough that I know 99.9% of the officers, and it really irritates me to go shopping or out to eat and see some jack ass from some other town walking around with his gun/badge showing.  Hmmmm.....who is a bad guy gonna target first ???

I would feel stupid going to a neighboring city and strutting around with my gun/badge on.

Concealed only for me...unless on duty.

We can open carry with a weapon we have qualified with, but you must have badge visible next to holster, clip on agency employee ID/electronic door keycard on shirt and handcuffs visible.  No one carries this way except when in plain clothes on training days (cause you have to do this to drive your take home car to and from training).

Our Dept. you cant even open carry with your badge on your hip on duty in any assignment if you are out of uniform, IE detectives etc...

If you are carrying under your dept credentials then follow their rules.

I know some officers that carry other than their "qualified" weapons under their concealed carry permits and the dept. has no policy on that.

Don't open carry your duty gun and you shouldn't have a problem.

+1

My department forbids open carry when off duty by policy.  I don't like that they feel the need to regulate my behavior in such a fashion when I'm not working, but I would never open carry anyway so I don't make a big deal about it.  I have never really understood why anyone would open carry in public if given the choice not to.

My dept allows us to off duty carry any handgun we can qualify on, (limited to .32, .380, .38, 9mm, .40, .45, 10mm) and we are allowed to go the range and qualify on any weapon we want if we give a range instructor a days notice.  Dept. policy dictates that we carry concealed when not in uniform, and plainclothes must have a badge visible next to gun

Think of it as the city recouping a little on your early retirement.

While in plainclothes and off duty (there is actually no exception for off-duty in uniform, like working a detail, or heading home, but no one conceals in uniform in these situations,) your weapon(s,) badge, handcuffs, and spare ammo must be concealed from the view of the general public, unless on an active crime scene.  This is not adhered to by many detectives in the suit-and-tie units while on duty during the summer though.

(Open carry is legal here though.)

Same here,  no OC off duty must be concealed.

Also must POST qual all weapons you carry off duty.

Concealed only off duty. No single action pistols, duty ammo only.

No open carry has been the policy of both agencies I have worked for.  I support folks right to OC but would never do it even if not a LEO.  Too much attention.
