From a blog entry:
http://carlbussjaeger.blogspot.com/2012/03/remember-gellin-and-leo-procards.html Remember Gellin and LEO ProCards?
Last year, I learned of a West Palm Beach cop selling cop-only(and cop family) get out of jail free cards. OK, not so "cop only"; he offered me some freebies (I declined). I raised a minor ruckus, as did a few other people. The WPB PD claimed Gellin had already been disciplined for this once, and they'd look into it again. Today – several months later – I received this update from WPB PD Internal Affairs. Gellin has been "suspended". No duration mentioned. If this is a normal Only Ones suspension, it's probably with pay (which means he just doesn't get over time). I also note that despite this, Gellin is still peddling his get-out-of-jail-free cards on his web site.* On the bright side, they've provided a wonderful example to which I can point when asked why I mistrust cops. Dear Mr. Roote and Mr. Bussjaeger, This note is to inform you of the outcome of our investigation regarding your correspondence with our Department regarding Officer Brian Gellin's former business, LEOProCards. On 11/17/11, we initiated an investigation based on your complaint which was captured in Internal Affairs under CCIF #11-098. The investigation was conducted by Sergeant Daniel Turner. On 02/27/12 he forwarded his findings to acting Chief Maria Olsen. It was determined Officer Gellin was in violation of our policies and procedures and he was subsequently suspended for the violation. Thank you for reporting your concerns regarding this activity. Your complaint and the Department's review and investigation will remain on file within the Internal Affairs Unit and a copy will be attached within the accused member's Internal Affairs file. You are welcome to review the investigative file for this complaint and/or obtain a copy of the file by contacting the Internal Affairs office at (561)822-1858. Sincerely, Captain Sarah J. Mooney #1301 West Palm Beach Police Department Internal Affairs Unit (561)822-1753 It may also be worth noting that Captain Mooney got Mr. Roote's email address wrong, so he may not know about this until he gets my email |

Almost as bad as those who hand over the "PBA" cards instead of creds. The first time (new rookie) I got one I informed the driver that I did not care if he was with the Professional Bull-riders Association. He did not think that was as funny as I did. I have seen more PBA cards from New Jersey than I can remember. Some people have a stack of them in the wallets, and hand over the whole bunch. Do they sell them in gumball machines in NJ? |

We are just as bad here in NY. |

Every PBA card I've seen has been from NJ. Its always a "family friend" too. I had a kid hand me one when I stopped him going 81 in a 30

I suspect that I'm not the only one here to feel this way, but when somebody name-drops or asks for a break because the know/related to/etc another officer, I am pretty much right there going to write them the ticket. I didn't stop you for the good of my health, and if you're trying to weasel out of a safe driving coupon, just because your buddy is a cop, then I'm probably not going to be able to get the message across to you any other way than to lay some paper. I have my own do not ticket list, which is pretty short - EMS and Nurses, basically, but that's a judgement call on every stop just as with anyone else. Anyone can earn a ticket at every stop, and some infractions are gonna get you paper no matter who you are.
But these cards? Dubya. Tee. Motherfukkin Eff. Anyone who actually puts down cash and buys these cards for their friends has some serious judgement problems. I would suspect that they would be the guy that internal affairs does not need to look up on the phone list to call in because they are in hot water so frequently that the IA guys all know his home and cell numbers off by heart. |

Just plain stupid.
It's even worst than name dropping. When I first got hired at my old Dept, I had someone drop my name that I worked with on my last day before getting hired on.. I knew his name that was about it. The best part, the officer that pulled the guy over and I talked the night before about this, I told him "Anyone drops my name, write em" . He told the name dropper that as he handed him the Cite. Later at coffee in front of my FTO, the officer told me about it. I told him "good, I don't care if it's my wife , kid or someone I have known since 1st grade, I didn't become a Cop so they could my friends could break the law" |

A lot of folks in the GD thread are saying I'm full of shit when I stated that name dropping is an automatic ticket from me. I do it and I've yet to ever have another officer question or complain about it; most adamantly agree with it. |

Most Officers have worked hard to get to where they are and don't want some person that sort of knows them tarnish their Reputation. Most people have no idea what Police really do, they think we sit around drinking coffee, yell at people and shoot the poor little angel that wasn't doing anything much and the Police were always harassing him. If many of these people were smart enough, emotionally strong enough , fit enough , sane enough , financially responsible enough and ethical they could be in Law Enforcement. You know why they are not? Many refuse to put down the F'n Bong, go for a run, go to school and get an education, pay their bills instead of buying that new XBOX game, know right from wrong even if they had bad parents. Yet, they flip us crap as they hide behind the anonymity of the internet, yes I am sure that many of them are part of the Delta/SEAL/Ranger/Ninja/Space shuttle doorgunner/SWAT 69th mess kit repair division and since there uncledaddy bubba was a security guard at the local dollar store, they know all about what cops do.... Sorry, I am tired and cranky. I am an O.T. Whore who has gotten 4 hours of sleep and am quitting Copenhagen after 31 years of it.
Stay Safe out there, remember your brothers in Blue care about you. |
Can't believe some people would have the nerve to try and use that. I was always so embarrassed to say my brother was a trooper before I was an LEO myself. Would not even do it until my brother told me too. Just felt like an ass, though it always worked... Now that I have a badge, well I am real discreet about showing it. But hey, you have to get your license out of your wallet.

If I need to park I just put up my hospital plac, New york is pretty crazy about the type of creds and tin they give out. So are some of your LT's, im gonna go see if I can find a picture of a thank you I once got for helping out a guys daughter when she was sick. |
