This is my old one,

I will start using this one as soon as I get it sighted in and a few hundred rounds run through it.

ETA: I should note that our policy requires rifles to have at least a 16 inch barrel.

and here it is after day 1 at the TX MG Championship this past November.

Kind nice to know you can hit a 4 moa target out to 480 yards with your patrol rifle.  Not that I imagine that would be a shot that would come up on patrol, but nice to know all the same.

This is actually a back-up to the ones I posted above. A Mk18-ish clone, this is as "correct" as it's going to get.

Magpul B.A.D. (Brownells)

The primary, in its current form:

Wow, you guys make me feel pretty bad about my patrol rifle.  Granted, its department issued, and I am the only officer at the department with an optic, and I had to beg and plead (and pay for the required hardware) to be able to do that.  We are rumored to be getting AR type rifles later in the year, some sort of M&P 15 with a quad rail, whatever model that is.  I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice if it was true.  Until then, this rides with me and I wish they would let me carry my LE6920 instead.

Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle, Ultimak Rail, Aimpoint CompC SM, Buttstock magazine carrier with spare 20 round magazine, and sling of unknown origin:

Its a whole lot better than nothing, which is what I had at my last department.  I actually really like the Mini, as it reminds me of my favorite semi-automatic rifle of all time, the Garand.  However, the Ranch Rifle, with its crappy folding iron sights, was not the best choice for a patrol rifle.  Our current chief, who is a gun nut, tried to convince the chief that selected the Ranch Rifle that there were better options, but it was a no go.  The current chief is the driving force behind the rumored purchase of AR type rifles.  Hopefully that works out.

That sucks!
Here is the evolution of my patrol rifle.  Luckily I was put in a position to actually make changes with our department's policy.  This was through (dare I say on ARFCOM) the FOP side of things.
I don't have any pictures available of my first patrol rifle.  My department some where along the line decided a 20" Colt HBAR would be ideal.  I was glad to have a rifle, but a 20" HBAR is not an ideal patrol rifle.  My old rifle is somewhere in my safe.  My department did not allow optics, but after my first barricaded gunman at night after getting the rifle I knew I needed something I could see at night.   It sucks when the individual pops out of the bushes 50 yards away with a gun in his hand and you can't see your front sight.  Perhaps I'll dig to old rifle out and get a picture of it.  It has a old Trijicon Reflex mounted on it.  I figured if I ever got involved in a shooting, the gooseneck mount would be easy to take off.
My (our) second rifle was / is a Colt 6520.  It's a great little rifle.  Once again, no optics.  I bent the rules and  moved my Trijicon on the 6520 and went about to change the regulations.

The Trijicon was ok, but I felt the need to change to an Aimpoint.  I was still in the process of working on changing the regulations.  Here are a couple of variations of my rifle in those days.

We were still only permitted to carry 20 round magazines too.   You notice how the sling just dangles there?  I learned my lesson with that after nearly dislocating my shoulder when my sling caught on a mic stand..  I've since learned to bungie my slings after that!
This past year I was able to get the regulations changed.  We can now carry flat tops with optics and lights.  I'm pretty happy about that.  I don't have a picture of my rifle during the one stage.  It was still an A2, but I put a Knights forearm on the rifle so I could have a co witness with my irons.  I carried my rifle in that configuration probably about the longest.  I'll see if I have a picture around somewhere.
Post regulation change, this is my rifle.  It's all department "legal" too.  It was a lot of work getting the regulations changed, but it was well worth it.  Several weeks after the change one of our members was at an incident and he specifically said during the after action report that the rifle with the Aimpoint made all the difference.  Good guys 1 bad guys 0.
Just a quick picture before I go out back to the range to shoot.

This is the version of the rifle that I will carry into retirement - a few short months away.

ETA:  Had to smile about that last part about retirement.

I don't have a pic handy but ours are plain 6920's with a Blackhawk sling.

We don't have any fancy stuff like optics or lights.  Why would you need a light on a rifle.  I mean can't you hold your flashlight in one hand and the rifle in the other when it's dark?

I know guys at agencies that have dumb ass regs when it comes to modifying their patrol rifles.  They have used duct tape to mount their flashlights.  Not the best solution, but sometimes it's the best work around you can do.

Not really. Although the 556 rd is balistically superior to any handgun round. Being able to have 3-4 point of contact (if you include the cheek weld) compared to 2 makes for a much more accurate/faster weapon (I.e. sub guns). Some depts "learned" admin do not and refuse to understand the difference between pistol and rifle rounds.

We aren't allowed a patrol "rifle".  Since becoming my dept's firearms instructor/armorer this year I was able to convince the Chief to purchase and put 870's in the car.  I was then able to convince him to allow me to have the .40 carbine because it takes our duty ammo & mags.  Baby steps my man, once he gets used to this setup I may be able to convince him to get proper patrol rifles down the road.

As jgeiken said, if I'm gonna be stuck with a pistol caliber I'd rather have it in a rifle configuration to get the added accuracy, a bit more velocity, and it's a step in the right direction.  Since I took over as our firearms guy earlier this year I was able to implement the shotguns, changed our duty ammo, upgraded our holsters from the widowmakers, and snuck in the personally owned pistol caliber carbine.  Not a bad step in the right direction I think, I'm trying but it's an uphill battle.

I cant wrap my head around a "chief" not allowing long guns for his officers, Hell.....I've got 2 AR's, 1 Mossberg 590A1, 1 Remington 870(less lethal) and three pistols in my squad at this very second.
