Excessive force.

I can't go into detail, but we'll just say an offender tried to jack
my fucking cuffs.  He didn't succeed.

One thing is for sure, though.  I will never fight for possession
of the state of Texas's handcuffs again.

damn yall dont have civil service or some kind of union or something?

the single strand on a set of handcuffs can become a meat hook and be used as lethal force pretty quickly. Im not sure that i would let somebody snatch a pair of handcuffs from me either.

Particularly in a correctional setting.  Me thinks you got screwed Boss.

The reasoning is that a set of state handcuffs is not worth an officer
risking himself over.

Me?  I don't like getting my fucking cuffs jacked.

It's a collision of policy and pride.

I lost.

Offender was cuffed.  He was in a secure area, and I ulocked one cuff, then,
he bucked.  I have this rythm which allows me to uncuff, resnap, and grasp
my cuff while then going to uncuff the other hand.  This particular hoebag
decided he wanted to make a point and, tried to jerk my arm out of the
slot......Hence, "Jacking my cuffs."....I made his decision a costly one.

Yes, I caught some paper on it.  I don't really give a shit.  Nobody on that
pod is likely to jack my cuffs now.  It's a matter of respect.

That's part of the job––deciding if the juice is worth the squeeze. I'm not a fan of catching paper on behalf of a mope, but sometimes you weigh the options and say, 'fuck it, i'll sign my name for that.' Been there, done that.

That's pretty much it.  I think this one was important.  Now, I'll just give up
my cuffs.  They don't matter that much to me that it's my job.

OP, what you're saying in the long run is that you beat the perp, but you didnt beat the braindead administration. So basically in the long run you lost and the bad guys (or the dumb paper pushing guys) won.

Theres ways of articulating everything. Im not saying to slant your report, but it seemed like officer safety was at stake there. If the guy jacked your cuffs and ran into a corner to hide, I would have laughed, closed the cell door behind him, and then called the crash team or prison swat team or whatever yall call it or gassed the cell or whatever yall do for trouble makers. HOWEVER, if he jacked your cuffs and was within arms reach and still acting threatening, he probably would have gotten violently tossed to the ground and re-detained until you could get backup. I wouldnt articulate it that way however, it would have sounded better. Still, if the guy is within arms reach and resists your handcuffing and gains control of an open pair of handcuffs, that sounds like an imminent officer safety concern. Short of beating the guy unconsious i dont see what you could have done to get an excessive force complaint sustained (im assuming you dont work for a good ole' boy political system where the chief will burn you for messing with his drinking buddies like i did).

Shit. I have to buy my own cuffs.

Had that happen once. He almost got a broken wrist out of it.

I just threaten them with additional charges if they do something stupid.

TDCJ's version is "It's about officer safety"...Which of course, it isn't.  It's about one
of their precious "offenders" getting hurt.

In the future, I will let the team go in on him.

My values that were taught to me by one good SGT were
"Handle your pod"

It's tough to get a handle on exactly the specifics.  I'm less than two years in to corrections.

What fucked me is that the guy was in a secured area.  There was really nothing at
risk but my pride, and, my fucking set of cuffs that I was issued.

Fuck them and issued cuffs.  Nest time we'll suit up.  Lesson learned.

It sounds like you learned two valuable lessons here. Pride will get you into trouble at the least and killed at the most, and your department will throw you under the buss to save their own ass.

You learned those lessons cheaply, it cost me my job in a manner of sorts in the long run...
