For all LEO's out there. I am trying to make my department see the light. How many of you are sporting Level IIIa vests. My department is under the belief that our Level II vests are adequate. Many that I have spoken to in the area state they wear Level IIIa vests. So...

Who here is issued level II and who here is issued level IIIa.

Comments welcome

Edit* If you could name your Dept with the level vest that would be great. Something I can put in a proposal I want to write up. PM me the info if you dont want to post it.

No vests issued here...... level II was the min. permitted. We used to receive a voucher for vests.

IIIA here.  Department issued every five years.  Can't believe things like this are an issue...

We purchase our own, I chose a IIA.  Lighter, more flexible.  Handguns don't penetrate IIA, and people don't die from backforce deformation.  The "more is better" mantra isn't always right.

I chose level II in the poll because that is what the department is willing to pay for.  We are given an option of paying the difference between that and a level IIIA if we want.  I paid the $100 or so difference and got the IIIA.

Level II since it defeats what WE carry.. 45.acp.
I have 2 IIIA's that I purchased on my own.

Department pays for level II.....If you want you can pay the difference for Level IIIA, which most Officers do.

IIA, why would my agency spend more money on officer safety when they could spend it on marked neighborhood watch cars for old people in rich neighborhoods to cruise around in?  They are too busy dumping all of our funding into ensuring they get elected again.  If they cared about giving us level III vests they would probably also issue us radios that work, cars with less than 200k miles on them or at least replace them after frame damage, issue X26s or give us new batteries for our M26s, replace or old corroded nasty duty ammo, offer real training (we have to set up our own training and take time off to do it), and the list goes on and on and on....  Can't wait for November 2012 to come around....

Level III from the lowest bidder.  We were told if we didn't like it, too bad we could buy our own. Sooooooo most of us did.

Wrong!!!....thats why we had ABA step up our IIIA vests...point blank 5 shots of 9mm +p+ penetrated....i.e. bad guy holding gun point blank and going to town.  I now wear IIIA with front and back arimid plates.

My department reimburses us $500 towards a vest. We can get whatever we want, however all of the reps from different companies almost make you feel stupid for wanting a IIIA vest. They strongly push the II quoting how the new NIJ standard means it's just as good as the old IIIa. Myself, I have a level II supplemented with a standalone level IV ceramic rifle plate in front.

Level IIA for patrol. I have a IIA, plus a IV for entries. You had better not be caught with an external carrier on patrol either,or without your Stetson. 93 years of tradition unmarred by progress.

We issue IIIA to everybody, replaced every 5 years. Our C/O's get a different stab resistant one issued.
