Craziest detail ever - "NYE Gun Violation Detail" : Drive around on 20:00 - 04:00 trying to apprehend people shooting guns in the air.
Looking for guys with guns. Who like to shoot them. And who are drunk. And then trying to arrest them. yee - ha ................. |

It's gotten so bad here that for at least the last 8 years they pull everyone off the street and back to the precinct at 11:45pm and hold them until at least 12:15 because of all the officer involved shootings on New Years. |

That detail started when some people got shot in the top of the head from the projectiles coming back down. I'd rather hand out umbrellas and do it your way |

Got a guy in my department who used to work NYPD. He said that they used to get out lawn chairs and watch all the New Years festivities from the roof of the precinct...until the rounds started coming back down. |

Had to tell a couple of the foot units (brand new guys from the academy) to find a doorway to stand under. Some of them couldn't tell the difference between fireworks and gunshots. BTW, I always enjoy the traditional "don't shoot anybody unless you really, really have to" speech on New Year's. |
