Ok gents, here is the scenario.
1) Stay with narcotics unit that you have been in for five years of your 22 year career, working in an office 4 miles from home with a couple great teammates and a fairly steady schedule. Downside is that the Lt is a little megalomaniacal at times and title III investigations mean long hours and weird schedules, also little to no advancement. 2) Accept sergeants position in a 24 man station 12 miles from home, station needs experienced leadership and another teammate is making the jump. Downside is swing shifts and being the bag holder, upside is advancement to higher positions. This one is killing me. |

Well just going on how they treat our Sgt's around here I would stay with the Dope Crew. If you place it like ours, when u get promoted you go to the bottom of the barrel again so that means workig nights, weekends, holidays etc despite how long you have on the with the dept. Not something that would be fun with 22years in.

If the amount of your retirement is based on last few years of service seems you'd be better off taking the promotion. In some depts that would increase the amount of your retirement entitlement.
Plus, if post-retirement you plan on some law enforcement job it would benefit you to have been a sgt. Then again, I knew some great cops who never wanted to do anything but work patrol. You couldn't have forced them to take a promotion. |
