| What is the current list for approved side arms? |
|
Except for certain special-assignment weapons, all HPD officers purchase their own firearms. A wide range of duty pistols (autoloaders and revolvers) were used until 1997. In September 1997, all new duty pistols had to be certain DA autoloaders in .40. (SIG P229, Beretta Cougar, and a certain S&W) Duty pistols being carried as of the 1997 policy change would be grandfathered, remaining approved for that officer if he qualified annually on schedule. That is why so many older officers are still seen with such pistols as 1911s and sixguns. Over time, the Cougar dropped from the list, to be replaced by the Beretta 96G, and the S&W model changed several times. The Glock G22 was added along the way. In the summer of 2007, a comprehensive new firearms policy added several new DA .40s, including the SIG P226, G23, and a few others, and I think no Berettas are still on the list. When a policy change occurs, what an officer is already carrying remains approved as long as he fires the annual qual with it. The preceding applies to "primary" pistols worn in the uniformed duty holster, with which the officer must qual on schedule. Back-up and off-duty handguns remain much the same as before 1997, .380 up to .45. These other weapons must also be fired on an annual qual course and be current if used for police purposes.
Only .40 is allowed, Springfield, Glock, S&W and Sig. You can have RDS on your AR but you have to take a class. Also to carry your AR you have to take a 40hr class. You can add the Springfield XD and XDM to the weapons list as well. They allow red dot, non magnified sights on rifles but they must be from a major brand name or whatever. I dont remember how they worded it but basically it has to be trijicon, eotech, aimpoint, ect. No burris, tasco, china mart, ect optics are allowed. these policies also tend to vary somewhat from division to division. I have seen the tac and gang task force units with pistol mounted lights and i have seen patrol officers with lights on their rifles and shotguns. I think alot depends on your assignment and detail and your immediate supervisor when you get down to lights and optics. The approved guns list is pretty solid though. |

HPD policy has changed. They do allow lights on pistols now and optics and lights on long guns.
I work for Metro PD and in some ways we have more latitude. In other instances we don't. We have always been allowed to use optics including off brand. Our policy on long guns is it must be 16"-20", 223/5.56. We can only carry 55 grain ammunition. Rifles and shotguns are personally owned. Pistols we have an approved list that can be changed by the department armorer and caliber must be 38/9mm or greater for on duty with a 3" minimum barrel. Off duty we can carry from a .32 on up. No single action (cocked and locked) weapons are approved. The department will supply 9mm ammunition as well as 223 and 12gauge. |
| HPD once had a pretty broad weapons reg. My partner carried a S&W 629 Mountain Gun (.44 mag.), and I carried either a BHP .40 or Briley Versatility .45 ACP.....I carried .357 revolvers, Comped Colt 1911's, all kinds of weapons not allowed by other major metro PD's.........Ahhhh, the olden days......Back then it was any auto 9mm or larger, and any revolver .38 or larger. |
