I'm trying to recall a term from my SFST and ARIDE training involving the walk and turn test. It's a term for when a person doing the test is moving/stepping extremely robot-like and is noticeably stomping the heels of their feet onto the road surface while doing the test. My first thought was gait ataxia but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks!

I like your description better than the super technical term.  Make it simple for the jury!

That is the correct term though, right?

Gait ataxia is a correct term, though I've not heard of it being used in a DUI investigation before.

Attended ARIDE a few months back.  Gait Ataxia is the word for-  Moon man, rubber legged, taking each step very cautiously.   If called to testify, I would make an effort to clarify it for the common Joe, much like "Nystagmus."

This was a DUI / Drug DUI investigation. No DREs available to assist

That is the correct term, gait ataxia.  I just taught the ARIDE class last week, and we demonstrated it.

Good idea to know exactly what it means if you are going to use the term.

Ataxia:  is a neurological sign and symptom consisting of gross lack of coordination of muscle movements.  Several possible causes exist for these patterns of neurological dysfunction, one of which is alcohol.

Thank you sir. I didn't want to add the term to my report until I knew exactly what it meant, lest a defense attorney would bore me a new ass channel over said usage.

no problem, anytime you need a question answered on SFST, ARIDE or DRE, give me a jingle.  Same goes for anyone else.  I tried to IM you my work email, but your inbox is full.     Be safe out there!
