No, it's not about a cheating spouse.

Ever have one of those foods you have been eating your whole life, and no one else has ever seemed to have heard of it?  No one I have ever met outside of my family had ever eaten this, and it is one of my favorites.  Trust me, it is easy and worth it.  By the way, if you HAVE heard of it, let me know, I am interested in seeing if anyone else out there enjoys it too.  Maybe I just live in a tiny world.

Two ingredients, mashed together in a bowl, served cold.

I've heard of it.
Grandparents used to bring it with them.

Don't like it myself, but then I don't care for cranberry sauce.

My grandmother (who came here from sweden when she was 12) never served a "holiday dinner" without the following dish.

Mashed potatoes and carrots.  Mashed together.

ugh. hated it.

Somehow, noodles became a favorite side at Thanksgiving around our house.  Grandma started it by using spare pie dough to make drop noodles with, Mom added cream of chicken soup.   Otherwise, it's just canned corn and green beans at our house.

the world's worst holiday food when i was a kid was tomato aspic (just the name sounds nasty to me ) which was basically tomato jello with all kinds of nasty crap (think shredded carrots and green olives) in it

What ya got there is a bastardized version of how I make cranberry rellish for Thanksgiving.

I take a package of fresh cranberries, rinse them and put them in a saucepan on the stove with the can of crushed pineapple and cook it 'till the cranberries are done.  Can't remember if I add sugar or anything else... it's one of those "use the force" side dishes.  You know, cook it a bit...take a taste, add something - maybe, cook a bit more...

It's fun to cook, because the little cranberries pop as they cook.  I'm easily amused.

Oh, and for my entry into the worst holiday dish when I was growing up -- the whole damn table.  My mom could burn water.  Then there were the arguements between my parents.   And now you know why I use to hate holdays when I was a kid.

Yeah, everyone loves that damn casserole.  After having it shoved under my nose for 14 straight Thanksgivings, the smell alone makes me want to punch someone.

Call it anger management issues.

Comments: I made a few revisions to this recipe and it turned out perfect! I added a tablespoon of minced onion, one fourth cup minced celery and one can of shrimp. I also used V-8 juice instead of tomato juice. The result was really good! My husband loved it and even the kids thought it was good.    this woman and her family are obviously ill

Tomato aspic was popular in the 20s -50s as a luncheon salad...not to my taste....although I've seen it in many recipe books. Only tried it once, and I will eat anything but brains, entrails and insects. Nuff said.

The Pineapple Cranberry relish sounds WONDERFUL. I like both of those fruits and never thought of combining them. Thanks!

btw...my mother used to make a horrible dish, creamed onions. Well, she ruined it with canned cream sauce and canned soggy baby onions. It was truely revolting.

I've had onions in cream sauce, prepared wth freshly cooked 'pearl' or boiling onions, made from scratch cream  sauce (or use half milk, half chicken broth for the liquid) and a touch of nutmeg and white pepper, they are good. Two servings good!   But just the words CREAMED ONIONS makes me queasy.

argh!

BTW, sweet potato pie at this house!

Gwen...
Thankful to be in the USA

Would "Revenge" be a main dish, or a side dish?

I know it's best served cold.  I prefer it topped with a smack to the head.
