Have not been to CZ but did fall in love with absinthe in Brussels. I like mine with cold water poured over a sugar cube, sip it slowly and feel the brilliance and madness blossom! I truly hate Yager and did not see a similarity... could have been the CZ variety.
Also...look at Lebanese Arak if you can find it, it is a bit less like licorice and is nice, again, with ice cold water and a sugar cube. Regards |
| I can't stand licorice so I couldn't make myself try absinthe even though ive wanted to. I've heard that it tastes like the worst thing you can imagine and then mixed with licorice. Now if there really was a green fairy I might try to drink some.... I'll just stick to my once every three month margarita lol. |

I'm fairly partial to the stuff personally, or I was before I drank a few too many glasses one night and couldn't remember waking up to be sick in the middle of the night the next morning. The hubby was extremely worried about me and had stayed up almost the whole night to make sure I was ok. So If you do try it, keep it to no more than two glasses I'd say, it's very strong stuff and the only thing I've ever gotten drunk off of that had made me blackout. I second the cold water poured slowly over a sugar cube, I'd say one part absinthe to two parts water as a decent ratio. Put the sugar cube on a slotted spoon over the glass with the absinthe in it. It also helps of you get traditional absinthe glasses. Around the Holidays Lucid usually has a gift set with the bottle of absinthe, two glasses and two slotted spoons. Usually you would use a fountain to drip the water slowly over the sugar cube, but the hubby and I would use one of those salad oil dispensers since fountains are expensive. The slow drip helps open up the flavors of the drink and creates a very pretty "louching" effect, where the color goes from green to a very pretty pearlescent white. MOst of the stuff I've tried has a strong anise flavor to it, but I like that as I'm fond of black licorice anyhow. I do have to say the best stuff I've had IMHO is the Leopold Brothers absinthe. It does have a bit of a peppery taste to it and the anise is still prevalent, so it may not be a favorite for someone who dislikes anise. Though the flavor does seem to vary a little from batch to batch. If I remember rightly, and mind you it's been the better part of a year since I drank the stuff, Lucid seemed a bit more mild to me. ETA: BTW from everything I've heard, the Czech stuff is crap. |
