Welcome.  My advice for your first AR is to build it. If you can find/afford all the parts. Go with the lightest smallest barrel you can. A very adjustable stock. A nice red dot scope.

Also don't disregard pistols. Often it's the only thing between you and a bad guy.

Hi Metal,

Welcome to the community.  I'm new here too, but not new to guns.  I have a fair number of pistols and love each and every one of them, you may find with some training and practice, that you find the perfect first pistol....warning, they can become addictive.

I'm new to the AR15 platform, as I recently purchased a S&W M&P Sport 15.  It gets great reviews and from all accounts a good starting AR.  You may want to check one out, that is if you can find one.

Welcome!

My husband is actually building me an AR right now (SUPER excited!!)  Like B.Stranger said, parts are a little tricky to come by right now, but it might be a nice project for your and your boyfriend to do together, plus you get to learn all about it during the process.

Also, +2 for not being so quick to dismiss pistols.  Take your time in getting acquainted with which guns you like and try shooting as many as you can just for the experience.  My interest began with handguns and am just now (a few years later) becoming interested in rifles.  There are so many different types and styles of guns that it can be overwhelming at first.  Enjoy the process, get comfortable and most of all have FUN with whatever gun(s) becomes your favorite.

Enjoy the site!  There are lots of good people here.
