(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back]
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30] |

Long guns can be shipped via USPO, UPS or FedEx, GROUND!
No need to ship Air, regardless of who you use. Downside to USPO is two-fold: - Cost of insurance is totally outrageous, especially compared with their 2 competitors. - USPO makes you jump thru so many hoops on a loss, that most probably don't ever collect on the insurance. |

"Totally outrageous"? $1,000 worth of insurance @ USPS is $11.70, at UPS it's $9.00, at Fed Ex it's $6.50 I'm an FFL. I ship & receive 14-20 handguns and long guns every week. I believe packages delivered by USPS are handled better- at least they arrive with less exterior damage. Footprints on the box are common on UPS and FedEx boxes. In my experience both UPS & FedEx are MUCH more difficult regarding damage claims than is the USPS. UPS & FedEx routinely deny damage claims as "Improperly packaged" often before even seeing the damage. With USPS I've never had a problem and didn't have to jump through any hoops. The only "lost" packages have been UPS, who are also the only ones to leave $3,000 worth of AR's outside my front door. |

Tom,
I don't ship guns (typically), so my experience with insurance has been on the $50-200 level and USPO is much more expensive than the alternatives. I've had claims with UPS, no problem collecting. Yes, I get a lot of packages thru UPS with tire-tracks, rips, etc. On the other hand, UPS ground charges are higher than FedEx and USPO in many cases (small 1-3# packages). I've been very impressed with USPO Priority Mail however, cheap and very effective for small items or things that fit their standard packaging. |

It's tough to beat USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for shipping handguns. (***Only firearm dealers can use USPS for handguns.) I heartily agree- UPS is waaaay high on those smaller packages. Shipping two boxes of .380 ammunition ran about $17 dollars last time (had to have adult sig). |
