Here`s my question. I travel through and around lots of small towns in rural Texas. If (while travelling) I have a pistol in my truck OR say a pair of shotguns in a case in the bed of my truck AND I pass through a school zone am I violating the law. Many of these small towns have NO way around them other that going through another town with the same situation.

I don't know about Texas law, but according to Federal law, if you're knowingly within 1000' of a K-12 school, the firearms have to be unloaded and locked up. I cannot recall what requirements there are as to how they have to be locked (ie, whether trigger/cable locks are acceptable or if they have to be fully enclosed), but if you've been through those small towns and know for a fact that you're within 1000' of a school, technically you would be violating the law in the manner you described.
