Is it legal to build an AR rifle on a receiver marked "Pistol"?

NO! You can never put a butt stock on a pistol lower. You can, however, fill out a form one w/ the ATFE and register it as a SBR.

ETA-After much research and confusion tonight I believe you may if you put a rifle length bbl on before the butt stock and it gets a bit hazy as far as going back to a pistol.

i thought it was ok to build a rifle from a pistol lower, but not the other way around.  you know, assuming that the barrel length is 16 inches long or longer.

Yup.  Just make sure the 16"+ barrel is on it before the stock goes on.

Thin of it like this:  A pistol can become a rifle (and back to a pistol again), but a rifle can never be a pistol with going the SBR route.

Hmmm, maybe/probably I am wrong here but I thought that once you turn a pistol into a rifle (16"&buttstock) you cannot make it back into a pistol again.<<<<legally that is.
feel free to call me a tard or whatever if I am wrong.

Here's a link that thoroughly answers your question:

AR Pistol Q&A

Q: What if I built it as a pistol first, then a rifle?
A: That's the only exception. If you build a pistol from a virgin receiver first, take some pictures and date them. Hang on to them. Then build your rifle. If you ever want to turn it back into a pistol, take the stock off FIRST, then put the pistol barrel back on.

Guess that makes me wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
