In the next few months I plan on doing a bunch of traveling for business, hopefully running into a few gun shows, or random shops along the way. Can I purchase a rilfe out of state without shipping it back to my home state through a gun dealer? Basically buy it and throw it in my car and bring it back home? Thanks Medic17

not legaly

In a state that borders your home state it is possible with a rifle, otherwise they will have to be shipped to an FFL in your area

according to the federal government, you  can purchase a long arm from a dealer in any state.

however, some states have more stringent laws. Soem still have the "contiguous" state law.... meaning you can only purchase in that state if you are a resident of a bordering state.

"B2) From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA? [Back]

A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]"

Out of state purchase, only through a dealer and ship it, to keep it legal. Thanks

Incorrect.

There is no need to ship it.

If your home state, or the state you are in, has a contiguous state law, you will need to have it transferred through a dealer in your state of residence ONLY IF you are not from a contiguous state.

I quoted the ATF law above. It's actually quite simple. As long as the laws of your state of residence, and the state of purchase are met, you're good to go.

If your state allows you to do it and the other state sells it to you its OK. I know here in SC we don't have any problems.

Most people buy rifles from an FFL in almost any state. (note I use most and almost) Here at Walmart, they have a big map on the ammo counter showing which states are reciprocal and which are not.  IE:  I can go to New Mexico and buy a rifle but not Nevada.  New Mexico residents cand buy here in TN but not NV residents.

You can transport the rifle yourself after purchasing it from a dealer.

Handguns and private sales are a no no.
