Why do some FFLs charge a transfer fee, and others do not?   Ok yeah, to make money, duh.  Does it cost them anything to receive a weapon and hand it over to me?  I honestly don't know.

Ok, a 4473 and a phone call.  So how does that add up to $45?  Or why do they ask what type of firearm it is?  Is a stripped AR-15 lower harder or more costly to transfer than a .30-06?

Think of it as a service not a fee...The FFL does have to receive the package, call you, do his part on the form, make a phone call and process it in his books that he has to keep recorded on file.

$45 is too much unless he also offers you a drink and a sammich.
