I have contacted the Sherrif, park service,Fish and Game, and everyone else I could think of including the DOJ. My question is... Is it legal to shoot a AR15 in the desert? The C.A penal code says it is legal to shoot on approved public land. What is approved? BLM? Does anyone know?

Thanks,
Mike.

If the AR-15 is legal (defined as registered in CA), and you are in a legal for rifle shooting BLM land area YES.  http://www.ca.blm.gov/barstow/recshoot.html

San Bernardino Sheriffs may not think so or say so but BLM says OK.  (I tend to think it is just non-professional obtusity on their parts. BEing dumb on purpose.)

contact the BLM office in the area that you want to shoot, and get something in writing saying that its legal.
then make copies and keep that paper with you, along with a AW reg paper wouldnt hurt either.

go onto the BLM website and order up a map for the area you want to shoot in, it will show all the BLM areas in yellow. a SoCal topo atlas by delorme from your local bookstore is another good thing to have and is GPS ready.

somewhere online is a San berdo no shoot/hunt map, check the county webpage.

with all that you shouldnt have too much trouble proving your in a legal shooting area.

its tough staying legal in SoCal.

so when they say "your papers please" pull out that pile and throw it at them.

Thank you. I feel like I live in East Berlin. I'll see if they will send me anything in writing.
