I have  North Carolina carry permit.
I transport RVs  all lower 48 states and carry my handgun in my pickup.
My permit has reciprocity in most states except a few "tough ones " which are MD, NJ, NY, MA, MN, OR CA, etc.

What am I supposed to do with my gun ?

Right now I remove the clip and hide the gun in a storage bin in the back of the truck (with tonneau cover), and keep the magazine's in the cab.

Is this the correct procedure ?

Peaceable Journey Laws.  What previous poster stated.  But, in NY, you'll either get gang raped, or a sheriff will understand.  Talking to sheriffs around the rural areas, most of them are of the "don't ask, don't bother" type mindset.  Closer to cities, or in counties with larger cities in them, could be different.  NJ you'll be at least "pretend arrested" for a while.  Check to see if you have to notify officers, NY you don't have to, so just don't say anything unless they ask.

In NJ I would lock the un-loaded gun in one box and the ammo in another box, no ammo in mags

NY will probably get you a felony.

How about getting the CCW permits for those states?

Problem solved. Consider it a work expense and write it off? (Don't know. I'm not an accountant)

Why not? 18B30 up above has an NJ permit?

ETA: Did some more reading. Stay out of that hellhole.

Permits for the liberal bastions are extremely expensive and difficult to obtain for the average bear.  It would actually be more cost effective to pass the reciprocal CCW legislation.

Do you have a New Jersey permit, or are you retired LEO?

If you're delivering in NY or NJ, you're not "passing through" and FOPA won't protect you. Not that it would in those states anyway.

No, the correct procedure is to leave it home. There is no provision in the law for you to take your gun into these states. FOPA only covers you if the destination is legal, which it appears is not.

NY is its own can of worms. AFAIK:
× you can only have handguns that are registered to you with the state
× still a Federal-style AWB, so magazines are limited to 10 rounds
× per the newer SAFE Act, you can only put 7 rounds in a magazine regardless of capacity
