I am in San Diego Ca. I just found a huge amount of mold in my GFs sons bedroom and a some noticeable amount in our bedroom as well.

My landlord is not a very cooperative or even nice guy. I feel he will retaliate and try to evict me if I report.

I am currently trying to secure a lawyer before I inform him of the mold just to be certain.

Is there anything I need to know before doing this? I was told by my neighbor that this was an issue before I moved in.

What does your lease say about your responsibilities as a renter to report such things to your landlord?

I will be communicating with my landlord.  I am just looking for any advice on what I can do to make sure I am taken care of after he flips out on me and attempts to blame the damage on me.

Not taking sides here, but how do you know it's mold?  Has it been tested?  Just because it's black and fuzzy doesn't make it mold. However, the landlord needs to jump on that to cover his ass.

I called a mod specialist. He came out and gave me a diagnosis.  Dew point mold.  I think that was the name.

He said it's easily removed. And very common.  So I'm going to take care of it myself.

I'm also going to go through the motions to prevent it as well.

If you're living in a place with mold and your landlord is a jerk, why the heck would you be upset to be told to go live somewhere else?

Good location, good neighbors, cheap rent, and I will mostly likely be transferring in a year and a half or so.

if it's mold due to high humidity, you can remove that yourself, but be careful about it not to cross-contaminate other areas and surfaces.

run a dehumidifier to remove the moisture that's allowing the mold to grow, or you'll be seeing it again in a month or less.
