Hi, guys. Would appreciate a little information.
Wife had a daughter before we were married. The daughter has a kid who is 10 years old now. We raised the kid from 0-2 years as daughter was on drugs. Daughter got cleaned up and kid went back with her mom. We always stayed in touch and she would come for visits. Now the little kid wants to live with us. Mom isn't on drugs but doesn't provide a good home. The little girl's mom isn't opposed to giving us custody (great mom, huh?) I'm assuming adoption would be expensive and more difficult. I assume there is some kind of parental agreement she could sign letting us have the little girl to raise. I remember her signing some such thing when the girl was a baby so I could put her on my insurance. We live in Collin County, Texas. They live in Calhoun County, Alabama. How best to proceed? Can my wife go there and the mom sign over custody? Does the mom have to come to Texas? I'd rather not have to bring her out here and send her back. Any advice is appreciated. I have two lawyer friends but don't want to bother them with this unless I have to. One is DUI defense in Miami and the other is now an anesthesiologist and was formerly an environmental lawyer. I figure ARFCOM might be able to help. Thanks guys. Btw, she is a sweetheart and a cutie.
