Unless there is a better place for this question, I'm looking for advice on crossing state lines.

I want to know if I can legally cross from NH to Maine for a weekend away with my AR or handgun or shotgun and ammunition. Does it make a difference if they are locked? unloaded? in the back of the vehicle? not concealed? for hunting?

Thanks guys!

IANAL, but since I have permits from both states and vacation there, I have made myself somewhat familiar with their laws.

NO permits are required to possess any firearms in either state.

All long guns must be transported unloaded. That's the only state laws that I'm aware of wrt long guns . . . method of transport IIRC is not addressed in either state's laws.

Handguns must be unloaded unless you have the state license that allows concealed carry (in a vehicle it's considered "concealed" even if OC in a vehicle).

My recommendation (not the law) is that all guns be cased and out of sight while being transported. CCW if you have a permit, but otherwise I would case the unloaded handgun.

You can use FOPA, but it isn't necessary as state laws in ME/NH are more lenient than FOPA.

FOPA does not exempt one from the regulations of the origin and destination state.

Understood.

I was just saying that he could lock them up according to FOPA, but since NH and ME will allow you to throw the guns on the back seat (uncased, but unloaded), there is no need to deal with FOPA in those 2 states.

Thanks guys. I'll try to get my CCW permit for ME. In the meantime I'll stay on the safe side and keep the firearms in the back of my vehicle unloaded and locked. FWIW, what were the acronyms you guys were using?

CCW - concealed carry

IANAL - I am not a lawyer

FOPA - Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 (Fed Law but not recognized in NY/NJ)

IIRC - If I recall correctly

OC - Open carry
