My cousin came to Colorado to visit me. We climbed a few 14ers and did some shooting. When He went to fly back he forgot to unload his J frame (in the same checked case as his AR, and G19). They caught it (xray), questioned him, and confiscated the rounds in the gun. He cooperated with them and made his flight, kept all guns.
He just told me that he received a letter in the mail today that stated he has to pay a $1000 fine to the TSA by the end of the month. The "offense" occurred last August. Does he have any options? Thanks! |

lawyer up over a $1000 fine? Or he could just bend over, pay the fine, and hope it's not an admission of guilt that will bite him in the ass down the road. FWIW, I would spend twice that just to keep from giving the assholes more money (they already screw us on taxes). YMMV. |

Its not the fine, its the watch lists, its the future hassles, its also the fact that they may have issued a "redress" number on him.
He needs the lawyer to make sure that they take the money and give him a letter or something in writing that is essentially a "honest mistake, no harm, no foul" card. This could haunt him not only for TSA but also for future firearms transactions and such. And if its a good lawyer (if there is such a thing), he may get the fine waved due to the lack of enforcement (timing) and also keep him off all the bad guy lists. My 2 cents......... |
