I was just watching a thing about Kodiak Bears on the Animal Channel. They said that a Kodiak can hear a ground squirl from 500y away, and smell food 10mi away.  WTF?? How do they know this? Did they see a bear run up to some food for 10mi and ask the bear, "How did you know that was here?", and the bear responded, "I smelled it 10mi away". What if the bear was just walking along in a general direction for 10mi and then got close to some food and smelled it when it was closer.
