Will Brake Cleaner eat plastic? What about Engine Degreaser? These are the generic store brand in an aerosol can from Auto Zone or Advance.
I've got a pedal boat that needs some minor repairs, one involving the gear box. The gears are plastic on metal rods. The drive gear's rod has two tabs that are supposed to fit in two slots in the gear. The slots on the gear are stripped out and I need to epoxy the rod to the gear. The gear and rod are covered in old grease. I've tried hot water and soap but this stuff is caked on pretty good. I think it's lithium grease. Degreaser and brake cleaner are the only things I have that I think may work to clean them up and get the epoxy to bond. I just don't want the plastic to get eaten away. I plan on ordering a new gear box but the factory won't be producing new ones until April or so. Until then I need a quick fix. My other thought was to pick up some Goo Gone or other citrus based cleaner tomorrow. Thoughts? |

It really depends on the active ingredients in the cleaner. I know some BC's that will dissolve plastics, and others that have no problems. I think you may want to check to see whether it's chlorinated or non-chlorinated... IIRC the former will attack plastics, and the latter will not. |
