| Anyone been through a hyperbaric oxygen therapy? I had a relative who had some breathing problems and went through the one at Travis AFB and said he felt great after. I know increasing the O2 concentration in the blood will make you feel better. How long do the effects last? |

Hyberbaric Medicine (HBO) is not necessarily used for respiratory ailments. In fact, there are some that HBO is contraindicated for.
I used to moon-light in our hospitals HBO dept when I was in the ICCU. There are only a few diagnoses that HBO truly will reverse or help, the most commonly recognized ones are the "bends" from nitrogen build up in the blood stream (but not too many diving accidents here HBO gives your body pure O2 on a systemic level. Your lungs, your blood stream, tissue beds of wounds etc...most patients feel better after a dive because of the nature of the treatment. Depending on your health before you entered the chamber, it might not last long. What respiratory issue was treated with HBO? Not doubting, just curious.... |

He was retired AF and had some type of lung issue due to chemical exposure. |

Are you sure they were treating his lung issues and not another diagnosis? Some chronic lungers feel better after a TX, but it's not an indication for HBO. There is no noticeable long term benefit. I think there may have been something else..... I would have to ask what it was specifically for. Just knew he had lug issues and was tired and had not a lot of energy. Probably had something else like you said. |
