So tell me about Fords, I've not owned one since my 85 Ford ranger...and it was a piece of shit.

I'm normally a MOPAR guy, but with the bailouts and all...I'm thinking of getting a mustang.

My Jeep is just too heavily modified to be a good DD anymore.  Plus the gas mileage sucks ass, and it's a 99...so she's getting up there, time to turn her into a trail toy.

So Ford got any better since my 85?

My first Ford was an 85' Ranger that I put over 225,000 miles on with basic maint. Since that one I've owned 3 more Rangers and had good service except for a 97' ext cab with the 2.3L motor. It was seriously underpowered for that size truck. I've owned 2 F-150's and my current ride is a 94' full-size Bronco with 210,000 miles. I'm a Ford man for life. YMMV.

My 85' ranger blew a freeze plug at 30k and 50k.  Reverse went out at 55k.  I traded it for a motorcycle, and my Ford hate began.  It was my Dad's truck, he gave it to me when I turned 15.

Since then, I've never even looked at Ford.  He didn't either, since he had to help me fix it.

Ford FTW. (and I WAS a GM guy til the bailouts, never again)

Get the Mustang.  Add exhaust (MBRP rocks), Short throw shifter, suspension (Handling pack).  FRPP makes some good shit.  Oh, and lose the shitty pirellis that they come with.

It'll handle like its on rails and be a riot to drive.   I had my 06 for 15 miles before FRPP (http://www.fordracingparts.com/home/home.asp)goodness was added.  Money well spent.

Also extremely happy with the 08 Expedition.

your 85 ranger must have been an 2.0/2.3l engine with a pos carb. i'm a ford tech of 20 years and i can tell you the quality is a good as anything out there now, if not better. we didn't take the bailout money and some clear thinking Americans have rewarded us by buying Fords. let me know what your interested in and i would glad to try to help with any info you need. and thank you for considering American first, Ford second

I think the first model year for the Ranger was 82' IIRC. Coulda been the whole "getting the bugs worked out" year?

I have an '08 Mariner.  First Ford in my family since a 1980 Mustang POS.  I'm amazed no one got killed in that thing.  It would stall at any moment. After 9 years it was toast.

The Mariner has been stellar so far with 17,500 miles.  I'm impressed with the quality, but it is still early.

It was a small underpowered 4 banger...I don't remember which size.

Which Mustang to get?  There seem to be several packages, which is the best deal?

My 1989 Ranger was sold after 21 years and 177,000 miles. Only 2 breakdowns in that time. Wafer broke in ignition switch at 15,000 and original starter failed after 145,000 miles . My F-150 was traded at dealer. It was a 1999 and had 90,000 miles and never broke down. Got locked out of the truck once, but that was the wife's fault.
So far, love the 2010 F-150. The ride is so much better than the '99.

Nothing will last as long as a 1988-1998 chevy or GMC truck.

The Taurus models 96 and up are good cars as long as they are maintained. The OHV V6 is a good engine. The DOHC "Duratec" not so much. You will hear stories about the transmissions crapping out and cooling system failures due to extreme rust build-up in the coolant. What they won't tell you is they never change the transmission fluid or antifreeze.

The Explorers starting with the 2002 models are good SUVs. They tend to have wheel bearings go bad at 80 to 100k miles but other than that I have not had any issues with the two I own.

The F-150 of just about any year is a tough truck.

We have started to see the 2010 Taurus's come in for service and they are very nice.

Fords I would stay away from are the Focus and Contour.

I used to be a Chevy man but these days you couldn't pay me to own one.

As always, YMMV and probably does.

I do work for every dealership in town, including the Imports. I have always been a Ford guy but over the years they have had some real turds, just like everyone else. In the last 5 years,Fords power plants have been excellent. I do not see any repeat type warranty problems like I am seeing right now with GM and CHRY. I like them all,and at any given design change one or the other or all of them will run into flaws. Right now the Fords are doing really good. I have 4 Fords in my driveway from 1999 to 2005. No serious problems with any. Fords interiors have come a long way and are on par with GM. I only do engine repair, so I cant offer much as far as Transmissions. My 05 Mustang GT has a 4.6 V8 rated at 315 HP,runs great and gets 22 mpg when foot is out of it.

I had a 1991 that was bullet-proof. I ragged on it for 13 years until a drunk blew a light and rear ended it.

I got a 96 F-350 with the 7.3 Diesel and 240k on it.  Still runs like a champ.  Replaced the retarded dual mass flywheel and she's GTG.

Brother has a 99 F-350 with the 7.3 and 220k on it.  The auto in it is the weak link.

Dad has a 93 F-250 with the 7.3 non-turbo.  190k and its the body that's giving up on it.  He never undercoated it new and should have.

I had a 1991 Ranger. 4x4, stick, 2.9l v6, also the best truck I have ever owned. I drove it to 200,000 miles and sold it to a friend for $500. He drove it until almost 250,000 miles then got t-boned at an intersection and totaled the truck.

I put about 35,000 miles on a 2006 Focus in a year.  I loved that car, wish I had kept it.  My wife has a 2008 Fusion, which I think is an extreme improvement over her Pontiac Vibe (and I liked that car, AWD model) but the MPGs kinda suck.  If we really, really try we can eek 27 mpg out of it.  Most of the winter we run about 22mpg, but that's mostly my wife starting the damned thing with her remote start and letting it idle 30 minutes before she goes anywhere.  I don't understand why, it heats up to operating temperature faster than any vehicle I've ever owned.

I have a 2001 F250 with 210,000 miles on it.  It's starting to have issues now, but nothing major, and most of it is expected things (ball joints for instance.)

I've owned 2 '86 half tons for plowing, an '86 Bronco II, an '86 Ranger, a '95 Ranger, and I will continue to buy Ford.

I'd like to get a SHO in a few years I think.

Where else can you find a car like a 96 taurus, where you have to take the bumper off the headlights off and the header pannel out and THEN take the radiator out through the BOTTOM??????  Thats some real genius thinking there.

GMs are easier to work on in my opinion. correction the foreign jobs are easiest actually. except the european ones.

The hardest car to work on I ever owned was Japanese, an Acura Integra. Replacing the timing belt was a giant headache. What a stupid design. I had to work through an access panel in the driver's side front wheel well.

The only complaint I've had with working on an American vehicle was on a 4 cyl Ford Ranger I had. It had 2 spark plugs per cylinder and I absolutely could not get to one of them to replace it. I don't know what Ford was thinking but you could not get that damn spark plug out because of other stuff blocking it.

Anyone who doesn't drive a Dodge is a pussy!

That's my take on the truck arguments. Having driven all of them recently though, I can say the Ford was my favorite. As far as reliability all I have to go on is Consumer Reports and a few others. That seems to indicate Ford and Chevy being about equal, Ford slightly ahead and Dodge not so good.

Ford Takes $5.9 Billion Government Loan
Thursday, 25 June 2009 10:00

Ford Motor Company was supposed to be the only major U.S. automaker not in need of a bailout, but this week Ford accepted a $5.9 billion loan subsidy under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA). The EISA loan is designed to help the auto industry by supporting “capital investments in facilities designed to produce vehicles with greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.”

It’s not a “bailout,” Ford executives would likely argue, on the basis that the money is a loan. But would Ford have been able to obtain the same amount of money and the same interest rate in the free market? To what extent is the loan (the difference between the government-provided loan and what the free market would offer) a subsidy? Undoubtedly, a $5.4 billion infusion of cash from already tapped-out taxpayers for doing what Ford was presumably already doing with their business model won't hurt their cash flow. And coming in a tough year for the auto industry, it was probably even more welcomed.

The Department of Energy also announced loans the same day to Nissan North America ($1.6 billion) and the start-up U.S. auto company Tesla Motors ($454 million), which specializes in electric vehicles.

The loans come out of the $25 billion EISA loan program, which would be doubled by the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, a bill now pending in Congress.

The news that all of the “big three” U.S.-based automakers are receiving assistance from the U.S. government is disheartening news. With the U.S. government already being the prime stockholder in both Chrysler and General Motors, should we be surprised if the government were to muscle in on Ford operations, using the billions Ford now owes the government as leverage?

The line between “private enterprise” and “government enterprise” is blurring daily under the administration of Barack Obama and his compliant Congress.

Definitely buy a Mustang.  I hadn't owned a ford since a shitty 1987 tempo back in the day.  More recently, have owned a 2001 Toyota Tacoma, 2003 Dodge Durango, 20003 Dodge Neon, 2004 Dodge 3500,2005  Infiniti G35, 2001 Porsche Boxster.  Bought a 2009 Mustang GT in Feb of 09.  Have 22k on it now, love it.  The build quality is good, performance is great.  Of all of the cars I've owned, the new car love affair has lasted the longest with this one.  FWIW, I still own the G35, Porsche Boxster, Ram 3500.  I drive the Mustang unless I need the truck to haul stuff.  If the wife didn't like the G35 and boxster, I'd have already sold them.

I've had Fords since 86 & haven't looked back....

All of them have been good runners & good lookers...

1982 Ford Mustang GT
1989 Ford Mustang LX Convertable (STOLEN !!)
1982 Ford Mustang GT (again to replace the stolen car)
1993 Ford Taurus (started a family)
1998 Ford Mustang LX convertable (Mothers day present for the now ex-wife)
1997 Ford F150 2wd
2000 Ford F150 2wd

Currently I only have the 2000 F150 but she's runnin good & has 160,000 miles on it. Only gets about 12 miles to the gallon though

But no biggie...come spring I got my H-D to keep the gas price down

I've got a 97 F-150, with close to 175,000 miles, and it runs like a champ. I also have an 03 Mustang GT, that runs great. I drive the GT more the the truck and avg. 18-20 mpg. It will make around 25 mpg on long trips. Got to love a car that runs like stink and still makes decent mileage. The newer ones or even better.
