Are those abomination Century sporters able to be converted to a "standard" FAL configuration? Do they have the typical "Century" problems?

I don't really understand what you mean by "standard" configuration, but the last couple of batches of Century FALs were built on in-spec receivers with some nice Imbel kits and were a pretty good choice for the money. Better than an Entreprise, but not quite DSA quality.

i meant changing out the shitty furniture-like that god awful thumb hole stock. I know that on some of the weapons produced during the AWB weren't able to be configured back to a standard configuration.

No thumbhole stock is used.......

You mean one of the early Century guns?   Does it have the folding cocking handle?

ANY of them can be converted to the standard FAL configuration.      The AWB is no longer present...and the import ban requires a certain number of US Parts to be considered US Made.   So, it is just a matter of using the correct US Parts (and, if it is out of spec getting a good gunsmith to get it to where it needs to be).

Yes, they have come a long way since the AWB batches.

You can ditch the butthole stock if you make it 922r compliant.

Steer clear of ones with a Century made receiver with the unibrow feed ramp- some of those are screwed up and a PIA to fix.  Others Century FALs should be fine- anything wrong should be an easy fix.

I've had one on an Imbel receiver since 1993 and it's been great.

Yes, a lot of the early Century L1A1 Sporters (thumbhole stock, metric receiver, commonwealth parts...no muzzle device) were built on Argentine or Imbel (Brazil) receivers....there weren't a lot of FAL receiver makers at the time.   So they have a good receiver with a good parts kit.

I bought one that was good to go.
Look out for ground down locking shoulders that were ground to headspace.

Back in the day, Century was known to the  FAL Files board as "The thousand angry beavers"

I remember reading a review of a Century FAL, stated that the metalwork looked like it had been done by a drunk with a rusty file.

DSA's are excellent. I have owned them. However an Imbel receiver is MILSPEC and manufactured by a FN licensed factory.

To answer your question: Yes

I have a Century rifle. Its a numbers matching STG58 kit. I don't see any US parts either. It was built on a Hesse receiver. Never had a malfunction either. Runs everything I've tried on click down from wide open. I have a DSA receiver I'm going to pt it on.
No reason other than the parts deserve it.  I have enough odds and ends parts to make me a truck gun on the Hesse.

Average Joe builds are running $700 to $800.  The days of $250 IMBEL uppers and $99 kits are long gone.

As mentioned above, yes and it depends to answer your two questions.  It really depends on which receiver they used in the particular build you're looking at.  Give us more info and we'll help you determine how much of a problem child it might or might not be.

Yep.  You used to be able to build a gun for around $250-300 before US parts, $400 with cheap US parts.  Those days are gone I believe since the kit sources are all gone AFAIK but you never know what could show up in a shipping container somewhere.

Are you the first owner?  I didn't think that Century made any guns on HeXXe receivers but I could be wrong.  Could it be a homebuilt gun that you picked up?
