I liked the video, but the bit about the teacher's union was a bit off. For starters, we're all aware of Detroit's economic issues. On top of that, 8 out of 9 students are black. I heard they don't do as well on tests. (Don't shoot the messenger.) Several things are implemented in Detroit schools through Federal requirements. For not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for several years, the following is in place: - Withholding of program funds or reduce administrative funds. - Implementation of a new research-based curriculum and provide appropriate professional development for all relevant staff. - Replace the district staff who are relevant to the failure to make AYP. - Remove particular schools from the district's jurisdiction and make other arrangements to govern and supervise these schools. - Appoint a reciever or trustee to administer the district in place of the superintendent and school board. - Abolish or restructure the district. - Authorize students in the district to transfer to a higher-performing school in another district and provide or pay for transportation One of the major "ideas" to improve such schools is merit-based pay. Considering there is no reliable way to measure it, I can't get behind it. The BEST teachers I know are given the WORST students, because they can handle it. As they get older, they'll get more desirable students. Some teachers are simply dumping groups for bastard children, and they'll never see a cent of "merit based pay." Teachers' unions, just like damn near any union, have a tendency to fuck things up. I readily admit that. However, blaming Detroit's school failures on the unions is a bit silly. You're dealing with the lowest caliber of "student" imaginable. Those conditions don't exactly lend themselves to attracting the best teachers anyway. Want to get high quality education in that zoo? Give people like me $70,000 (starting) tax-free salaries and armed security. Physical restraint and confinement must be permitted, and school uniforms in place. Position should come with a furnished apartment. - BG EDIT: http://www.detroitk12.org.nyud.net/schools/reports/pdfs/district_profile.pdf |

You can blame all that shit on the progressive movement and government welfare blah blah blah.
To some degree its true, no doubt. Sweden has many of those same programs and you dont see them in that state though. Theres one huge contributing factor to Detroits problems and no one wants to say it.

It's a damn shame for the kids who do have the potential. ![]() |

They had all their eggs in one basket - US auto manufacturing. Figuratively, the got high and grew fat and lazy when there was no relevant competition. They did not innovate, improve themselves or diversify their economy: both the companies and the unions. The tax base was sufficient to support unaccountable government and a moucher class and nobody paid attention. Then when other companies realized that they could build a better product and for cheaper in places like Japan, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina they sat on their largess. Now they are left with people who feel entitled to earn management money for manual labor and others to earn manual labor money for no work at all while the company and tax revenues that supported such sloth are no longer there to support them. |
