But I remember we had a thread about the train vs tornado video last year here, and it was pretty impressive. Maybe somebody can find it on youtube and post the link. Good stuff, worth watching again. |

I saw this video tha other two times it was posted here. Even so, I can't help but watch it again. Seeing that tank car coming at them had to give the train crew a serious puckering back there!
On a side note, this video could be called "A video about the Democratic Party" |

The tank car hurtling toward me made my butt pucker too. ![]() I'd be doing my best impression of a movie action hero jumping the fuck out of there once I saw that coming at me. |

Bad idea...almost all survivors of trains wrecks are the guys in that stay in the locomotive. Not the guys that jump. That is a rear facing unit, from the dash cam. It would have been wild to watch that in the mirrors. ETA: The two scariest sounds I remember from railroading were my train going into emergency (You can hear the air dumping in the video). And your cab signals going changing to red, which means something just made the the system think that something is occupying your track at 70 mph. |

I was thinking along the same lines. I had a gut feeling it was going to be bad, but HOLY SHIT! They were lucky what ever was in that tanker wasn't flammable or toxic |

Do you just hope and pray and keep on truckin'...er, trainin'? I'm curious. It's not like you can pull to the side of the road and jump in a ditch. |
| for a moment it looked like the train was slowing down then when it got into the tornados path, you could see the trees blowing, but it looked like the train went hyperspeed, then when the first car fell over you could see everything and it just was really slowing down lol. But hell! I would have ducked and held on to something as hard as possible! and the noise must have been deafening! I've been next to a train that pushed empty cars then braked to let the cars roll down to latch with other cars. The sound boomed each time the cars collided into eachother, kept booming for long time about 20 cars! |

Having family that work the rails and working for the RR myself, I can tell you that they just keep going. Those engines weigh 250+ tons for the new ones, going 60+ MPH, it will take a hell of a lateral wind to move one of those things before it's out of the effect area. The rest of the train will derail pretty easily, like a tie placed across the tracks just so. |

I knew those train cars are SUPER heavy, and that it would take a really strong tornado to knock them over. That is just a moderate tornado. Trees are left standing. A tornado can have an incredibly intense focus on what is actually just a few cubic feet in one place or another, with much less intensity just a few feet over. If you think of a tornado like the 'crack' at the end of a bullwhip –– a very focused 'event' rather than a 'thing' –– it is easier to picture in your mind what goes on. |

....... until the cars behind the first section of the train that were still on the rails came barreling in and smacked into the other cars
