Answer:
NO, you cannot safely fire a .22 l.r. in a .22 magnum/WMR chamber.
The magnum case/chamber is larger diameter and the .22 l.r. will most likely split or burst when fired.

Well, I was told by a Walmart employee that I could safely shoot .17 HMR out of a .22 magnum rifle.
