For about the 5th time Dell cancelled my new desktop order. I really need a desk top soon to process data. I was all set up for the XPS i7 intel processor 9G Ram 1TB Hard drive. I need to get something in and freaking Dell seems to be unable to actually ship anything. Any ideas on a comparable system? HELP!!!

why did they cancel your order?

Dell won't say why but it happened  I think four times over two months because they could not get the parts. I called them but they would not tell me details and would only say its definitely going to be here on the next date. Which I would then get an email saying it was delayed.

What does building one entail? I looked at ibuypower and thought serious about them. I have limited tech knowledge really. Thanks!

Another one for build it yourself.  Save some money and get some quality parts.  Dell really skimps on the PSU / Video solution.  What is your use for the workstation?

The only thing that I don't like about the combo is the video solution.  But that's about it.

If you are NOT doing a top end gaming rig, get a laptop.
Everything is USB these days, and most newer laptop have nice graphics chips and 3-4Gb of ram.
I quit buying Dell 20 years ago, never had a problem since.

I'm with the build you own crowd.  Get exactly what you want and plan for upgrades.  In the Portland Oregon area Fry's is THE store.  Walk in, get your parts / OS, go home and it's together in an hour or two max.

I am thinking of going with an Alienware unit. It has everything I want with 2 hard drives, 9 G Ram, i7 processor. Any thoughts?

I don't think I want to build it my self at this point. I need it to work, no to work on it.

Alienware is owned by Dell

Alienware is rediculously overpriced

Sorry to be depressing, but you get exactly as much value for dollar with Alienware as you will with Monster Cable.  Take a look at any of the HP computers in the Newegg link I posted above.  Newegg shows them being in stock right now, so you don't have to wait for Dell to screw up your order.  With the light gaming that you're doing, you don't need to waste several hundred extra dollars on higher-end graphics cards like you'll find in an Alienware box.

If you need a second hard drive, buy one and plug it in.  SATA is idiot-proof, and adding the drive will take 5 minutes if you're drunk.

Ok, I looked at the link and I like this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229168

But from looking at it, it does not seem to support two monitors which I really want. Neither do any of the HP units there.

Look at This HP unit.  Click on the "360 degree view" link right below the picture, and then click the link to view the spec sheet.  HP's spec sheet says that it has 2 DVI ports, so it'll support 2 monitors.

This is the only one that I dove deeper into the specs, some of the other ones may also offer support dual monitors if you look more closely at them.

Another vote for building it yourself.  Newegg is a great site, with great prices, and it really isn't that hard.  All you have to do is make sure the components you buy have the same slots that your motherboard does (and that you have enough slots/room if you plan on using multiple or very large video cards, or other [usually PCI Express] cards such as WiFi cards, sound cars, etc) and everything pretty much plugs right in.

ETA:  If you do go this route, buy the biggest case you can that will meet your needs.  This will usually mean lower operating temps, and can usually allow a little bit more overclocking before you will need to move up to liquid cooling.

Here is the thing, if I build it and it does not work then I am screwed. I have no experience troubleshooting hardware issues nor the time to do so really. The ibuypower seems to have mixed reviews, I not sure about them as a result.

Apple has the best post-purchase support in the industry as far as I'm concerned, right up till the day your extended applecare warranty runs out, then you can go get fucked.

I've worked with Lenovo once or twice and they're not too bad if you need a PC specifically.  HP's another longtime OEM like any of the rest.

What specifically are you looking for?  Running a particular program?  Heavy media storage?

Adding drives, RAM, these are generally easy tasks in tower cased machines.  If you can change games on an oldschool atari, you can put in RAM or a hard drive anymore.  Buying these things before you necessarily need them, especially from the vendor of the machine, is a recipe for paying as much as possible.  At the same time, I know where you're coming from in just wanting to pay someone else to worry about all that shit.  It's perfectly legitimate if you can afford it.

Good job, Intel Core i7 920 is best bang for the buck poweruser processor out there right now.  The 920 will be replaced shortly by the 930 but it's still the best value.

Nah probably not.  Cuz even if it is a brand that everyone is ragging on.  It is still faster hardware than I got :D

Clue added!

I really just needed a good data processing machine that would handle a lot of data and keep working. Also need to edit video and pictures for websites. The ability to play games is a bonus and for a little downtime fun. And I just can't justify the time to work on hardware. I just have to pay someone else to do it for me. Warranty, and tech support at this point trumps cost savings.

Ok, its an Alienware unit.

I am looking forward to getting it. The timing will be good, with new project data coming in about then. I just hope its not delayed. It will be a sweet dual 22 inch monitor set up. I ended up calling them and after pricing out other systems the Alienware as built was about the same so I it was an easy decision. I even managed a discount from the online price.

I used to be part of the build it yourself crowd.

But there was ALWAYS one critical little cocksucking part that wouldn't work and it would drive me batshit crazy for a week until I went out and bought a more compatible part.

I decided it wasn't worth it any more.
