It was a cold day last fall and the firewood was kind of wet so I was having trouble getting it to produce much good heat.

Then inspiration struck...

Nice! Our motto when winter camping is "It's not a fire if it can't be seen from space!"

I build a forge using the same thing as a blower.  It worked.

The same attitude I had as a Boy Scout.  If you didn't come away from the fire with the start of a tan, it wasn't not enough...

I'd believe it! What were you using for fuel and a firebox?

Hardwood charcoal and the forge was built from fire brick.  Sparks and ash everywhere.

Me and a buddy made what we called the roman blast furnace.  We had a chiminea (clay outdoor fireplace thing) in our backyard and we would build a good size fire to get a ton of coals built up.  Then we would put a box fan blowing into it and have flames shooting several feet out of the chimney.  That thing would melt a beer bottle in no time.

I think that's the ancient Indian method.

I use another ancient Indian method to get my wood stove going––propane torch.

That would work against my wife, but not me.

Dig a "dakota fire hole" and then you don't need to lub a shop-vac and extension cord around.
