OK, so I have a USP in .45 and love it. I bought it used off the EE a couple years ago. I have never had an issue with it. Guy I work for recently told me he was in the market for a 9 mm. and was kinda interested in a Beretta 92 since he had one before and liked it. I kinda steered him toward a USP and basically told him I thought it was a better gun. Well, few weeks ago at Academy I saw one on clearence for $579.00. I have NEVER seen a USP that cheap and told him about it. He just bought it yesterday and hasn't shot it yet. Is there any break-in periods on USP 9 mm.'s? I don't know since I bought mine used. Thanks.

is there a break in period for any guns?

GTG out of the box as far as I'm concerned, if it has issues then it's a (rare) lemon.

Yeah, if he has any problems with it I'm gonna feel slightly responsible since I talked him into going the HK route. He doesn't really know much about guns so he trusts my opinion.

What kind of mags are those? They don't look like stock HK mags? Is that what they call a Jet-Funnel conversion?

Yeah they are HK 18rnd LEO mags...Need a "Jet funnel" kit for em...My HK has no saftey either LEM trigger and bobbed hammer

White mags for use with the jet funnel.

USP needs no break in.

the first time I had my USP 9mm at the range, I had a casing that didn't eject right and had a jam. It never happened again. trouble free since then 2,000 rounds or so. I love mine.

Like everyone else has said the USP was originally built for 40/9 so they are GTG and either way your friend would have went he would have had a great handgun out of the box, I prefer the HK but I also love the M9/92fs.

I bought a 45 USPC when they first came out. One of the first 200 made.I paid I believe 499. When I first shot it Icould just stay in a 25 yrd timed fired target.I was not happy. I called HK and said to shoot another box. It started to improve. It would then put Silvertips on top of each other. There was a guy with a fullsize 45, agian an early one and it did the same thing.

It's good to go straight out of the box.

Funny, I had the same experience with my USPc... right out of the box Ii was like  then after a while I was now I cannot miss with it -

They're made for the USP Expert, but you just need to install a jet funnel on a full size USP to make use of them.

where'd you get that mag funnel, is that what a jet funnel is? a link would be appreciated, i traded my 40 c a while back i regret it, just sealed the deal on a 45 compact for 640

I have a full size USP40 and I am not a fan.  Bought it off of someone who only fired a single box of ammo out of it.  The compacts are pretty decent, but the full size USPs are nothing magical.  Reliable, feeds well, mags are GTG.  The controls/mag release are my two biggest complaints.  The nicest thing I can say is that as far as a service pistol goes, I'd much rather have a USP than a Beretta 92.  Personal preference...  YMMV

Only 1911's need break in

Seriously I think any decent factory gun should NEVER need a break in period.

For example I took a tour of the Beretta plant and they had machines to manually cycle the slides and things on new guns before they put them in the box.

I have had my USPf .40 since middle of 94.  Great firing, reliable from the first.  It can be reliably carried cocked and locked.  There are also a firing pin safety that has to be disabled by the trigger pull.

Does any German engineered firearm require a breaking-in period?  Certainly none that I have purchased.

I used to own a USP40.  Gun was reliable and accurate.  I just could never grow to love it.  Spongy trigger, big and blocky, high bore axis, and $$$ mags.   But it never gave me any trouble.  Sold it off and have not regretted it.  It's a good gun, but I prefer others.  YMMV.

ETA:  Gun was trouble free from the start.  No known break-in requirements that I am aware of.

You may have me there.  I don't think Walther has been the same since the S&W deal.  My PPK sure isn't up to standards, but it was also manufactured here in the USA.

This will make you sick.

My boss just bought a very lightly used USP45, in case with two mags for $250.

No shit.  No games.  Legally acquired gun.

Out of my 12 HK's none of the guns needed to be broken in.  A few of the mag's need to be tho.  Mostly just wearing off a little paint.  Often when people complain about a new with problems its the mag that is the source.

I own 2 usp`s (.45 & .45c ) when they were new I didn`t have any problem with how they shot. I think he is good to go. tell him not to worry.

Pffft, no break-in for a USP. Just clean it when he gets it, load it up and shoot it.

I've had my USPc / 40 S&W since about '99.  It's been a great gun except the one time I had to replace the firing pin which broke after endless dry firing on my part.

Since then I've used SnapCaps for dry fire practice with no problems.
